06 Centerpiece Story - Canada

Διηγούμαι την ιστορία του χυμού ενός δέντρου που έχει γεύση μελιού...

I sing the song of a tree sap that tastes like honey…

The plan to head North was a good one.  We were soon coming into woods again dotted, I swear, by 10, 000 lakes, but we had plenty of food and the scenery was definitely better then just open prairie and corn fields.  The weather was getting cooler and we could tell the time by when the mosquitoes came out. But the leaves and the colors were magnificent, the reds and the ochres, and the brilliance of them, if only I could draw as well as I could write. We enjoyed the colors for a week as we continued our trek northwest into a land

called Canada.

I was startled awake by Xena, doing her yell and the whoosh of her chakram. By the time the chakram hit the tree, I was standing ready with my staff in my hand looking around for the danger.  There wasn’t any, Xena smiled and said "well, now that you’re up we should get going, the weather is about to change and we need to start heading south".  I went over to the tree to get the chakram, wanting very much to throw it back at her. But when I put my hand on the tree, there was some sticky liquid oozing out of it and it smelled good, so I tasted it and it was sweet. Forgetting the revenge and remembering that we were out of honey, I called Xena over and she tasted it. She then set about our stuff figuring out a way to funnel the sap into a bucket. Using the spigot idea from the water tower in Chicago, we soon were filling our bucket up with the sweet syrupy sap. Soon we had enough to fill the empty honey jars. As we were getting ready to leave we found ourselves surrounded by warriors. One man noticed the spigot in the tree and that the tree was bleeding, and

we found ourselves looking at spears.

Xena was getting ready to fight but I knew that they believed we had harmed the spirit of the tree, so before the fighting started I showed them the sap and explained that maybe the Higher Spirit meant for these trees to give us their sap or else why would she have made it sweet. The Chief tasted the syrup and found truth to my words. Xena showed him how to get the sap out of the tree and we continued on our journey leaving the Great Nation’s People

harvesting the sweet maple sap.
