27 July 1999

From Sharon Delaney:

Another rumor is making the rounds that newspapers such as the Sacramento Bee are reporting that Lucy will not be doing the Sixth Season of Xena. Not true, folks. When the Sixth Season starts to air, Lucy and Renee will both be there.

For those wondering how Lucy is doing. The interview in newsletter #8 will give you an update. For example, it covers when Lucy told me she was pregnant, whether or not she's a grumpy pregnant person and the difference between being a 19-year-old mom-to-be and now.

And in the interview with Renee we discover what she did when she found out Lucy was going to have a baby. You'll get a chuckle out of the answer to that last one (grin)

The Way - Well folks me thinks there is movement at the station (oh sorry I borrowed from the poem The Man From Snowy River and non Aussies who haven't read this wouldn't know what the heck I'm talking about...humour me) Okay it seems that The Way has been reinstated in the Historicus Biblicus synop section on the Official Xena Web Site! Way cool...now lets see it back in syndication and MAYBE Aussies will get to see it for the first time if the show ever comes back on here! Many thanks to

21 July 1999

For Dutch Xenites - Petra de Jong passed on the following message:

Just got an e-mail from Veronica, the Dutch network that airs Xena and Hercules. The shows will be back on Dutch tv in September:

September 6 start of new Herc eps
September 7 start of new Xena eps

Good news of course, except for the fact that the shows will now be aired at 4pm...an even worse timeslot than before (5.30pm). Not only because of the fact that no one can watch it then (since most fans have full time jobs and won't be home around that time (thank the Gods for VCRs)) but also because of the fact that those new Xena eps will be the third season eps.... Not really stuff for kids IMHO

Time to hose down another rumour...someone on ICQ has been impersonating
Renee O'Connor - it's not the first time someone has tried to impersonate one or both of the stars of XWP. Sharon Delaney has responded to these rumours by going to the source and asking Renee.

"It seems there's another sick person out there trying to fool people. Someone calling themselves Renee O'Connor is talking to people on ICQ. I've confirmed that Renee does not have ICQ."

An Anonymous contributor to XIP sent me a graphic of a Xena spoof from the latest issue of Penthouse Magazine and who said that women weren't fully clothed in that vile magazine?! It's Madeline Albright dressed up (again) as her hero, Xena! Showing a nice pair of ...muscular legs :-) Go Maddie!

18 July 1999

Xena has been named the "Warrior Theologian of the Year" by THE DOOR: THE WORLD'S PRETTY MUCH ONLY RELIGIOUS SATIRE MAGAZINE in the July/August issue. Xena is on the cover with a purple aura around her body and a golden halo around her head, and a background that looks like something out of "The Way." Xena's dialogue with Hanuman is excerpted in the short article, and mention is made of the Hindu controversy, but there's also mention of earlier eps where Xena has "spiritual interactions" with the gods and goddesses of sundry world religions. The article explains 6 good reasons why Xena gets awarded the "Golden Calf." "Take away the hotties, the leather skirts, and the big swords, and X:WP is about redemption." Very tongue-in-cheek piece.
Many thanks to Alicia Gaspar de Alba for the alert

For South African Xenites: Many thanks to Lawlsfan for this news

The SA Broadcasting Corporation has recently received a judgement from the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa regarding the airing of Xena on SABC3. The judgement basically stipulated tha the commission found that the series "contained some content not suitable for younger viewers, and that it should be broadcast during a later time slot in the future".(1)

This is from Sharon Delaney:

I've been receiving a lot of messages and reading on the lists that folks would like to know how they can share their good wishes with Lucy and Rob on the upcoming birth of their child.

Lucy has long been a supporter of Starship Children's Hospital in New Zealand and they recently started a campaign to raise funds to develop a nationwide "telemedicine" network. At a news conference, Lucy stated that, "Fortunately, I live close enough where getting access to excellent care is not a huge problem." She said that this network would allow children in remote areas of New Zealand to be able to participate in the hospital's services. Lucy handed out Starbears to help raise the money.

Fans who wish to contribute to this cause by buying "virtual" Starbears, can send checks (in U.S. Funds) to:

Starship Hospital
P.O. Box 9389
Newmarket
Auckland 1031
New Zealand

If you send the Official Xena Fan Club a postcard listing your name and donation, we'll keep track of the amount raised and let everyone know how we're doing in the next issue of the newsletter and on the fan club web page at http://www.creationent.com

A Starbear costs $1.50 -- how many bears can we give birth to? :)

P.P.S. You do not have to be a member of the club to participate :)
P.P.S. Online folks can send emails instead of postcards.

TV Guide in the Sydney Morning Herald - 5 July 1999

Singing Detective

It seems that Water Rats star Jay Laga'aia will not be short of work if he ever decides to give up his day job. The multi-talented actor and singer is now a recording star, with Sony taking his song Lets Party from the recent Water Rats CD sondtrack and releasing it as a single. Wtih the Nine police drama on a break from filming, Laga'aia is heading down to New Zealand to star in the stage show Xena :The Musical (don't ask), and will sing the New Zealand national anthem at next months Bledisloe Cup at Stadium Australia.

He has also scored a major role alongside Marcus Graham in a new telemovie, Green Sails, a US-German co-production to be filmed here later this year.

[Xena: The Musical is not a stage production but an upcoming Season 5 episode.]

The new book by Ru Emerson is now available. It's called, "Go Quest, Young Man".

XWPbook.jpg (110746 bytes)A brief synopsis (copied from the back cover)~

Calling All Questors!

Draco, ex-lover of the Warrior Princess, rejected suitor of Gabrielle, heeds the call. So does the pure-of-heart young hero, Bellerophon. Rumored to be the son of Poseidon, he's determined to live up to his lineage. And so does Joxer. He goes to seek fortune, fame-- and Gabrielle's approval.

But Xena soon discovers that the voice behind the summons belongs to an old enemy --Menelaus, the King of Sparta. If he is involved, Joxer could be headed into dire danger. So the Warrior Princess and Gabrielle follow the hapless hero to the Spartan palace, where she sees another unpleasantly familiar face: a venal priest of Apollo named Avicus. King and priest are up to no good. But what is their plan? And can Xena stop them before the ship of foolish questors sets sail?

29 June 1999

The following information is from Jason Blevins from his post on a.t.x

Bruce Campbell appeared at the Trek Expo 99 and here are some of the highlights:

*
Somebody asked if Autolycus might get his own series. Bruce said he didn't think that would work with Autolycus alone. He said it would be like having only spicy foods for dinner every night. He said it would quickly give you a stomach ache. Bruce thought it might work if Joxer were also in the show, because no matter how much of a buffoon Autolycus might be, he would always look good compared to Joxer.

*

Somebody asked what it was like kissing Renee O'Connor in "The Quest". Bruce said that, in addition to the kiss, he enjoyed putting his hand on Renee's behind. He said that Renee is very athletic and works out on a StairMaster. He said that her buttocks were so firm that his hand didn't even make an impression. Bruce joked that, after the scene was over, he didn't think he had done it quite right, and he wanted to shoot the scene again.

17 June 1999

This note is from Josh Becker and please be warned it contains language not suitable for kids towards the end of the letter.

Dear Tony:

The chances are these days that whatever you get hired to direct the script will be crap--most writing for TV and movies stink. In most cases, you take what you're given and go do what you can with it. Most directors are not writers and make no attempt at any rewriting, nor would they be allowed to. I, on the other hand, have a bit more latitude in that I am friends with Rob Tapert. On some other show I wouldn't even consider making the changes that I do on "Xena."  The old expression goes, "If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage," meaning the show will never be any better than the script. If you don't like episodes without Lucy--and neither do I--it doesn't really matter who directs, Lucy still isn't in it.

And as a little note, don't feel apologetic about not liking something I've done. If you feel like you want to critisize something of mine, go ahead. I'm critical of most everything all the time.

Speaking of being critical, I don't give a shit what any fans say about me. I don't do what I do to please fans. If they like what I do, great; if not, fuck 'em.

Josh

Courier Mail - Thursday - 10 June 1999 - Many thanks to Xenrielle for the snippet

The role of Mitch [All Saints] has changed for Thomson from playing Hades, Lord of the Underworld, in Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules. "Most actors in New Zealand have worked on Xena and Hercules," he says. "It's fantastic -- you go to work, get dressed up in leather and make-up to shoot thunder bolts from your hands. "Of course, it doesn't solve the problems of the world, it's pure escapism." In the past, the former Tauranga Boys' High School head boy often was cast as a bad guy or sleazy character.

10 June 1999

"Puffy, Xena, Quentin, Uma And 10,000 Other Names for Your New Millennium Baby" by Joal Ryan (who is a writer for E! Online).

At first I was afraid it might be making fun, but then I opened it and read what was written under the name "Xena..."

On the back cover it says...

"First things first: You don't want to repeat your parents' mistakes. No Mountain Moonglow or - heave forbid - Jennifer. And you understand about image, the need to establish identity. You want a name that is out of the ordinary but not weird. You want advice from someone who speaks your language and has innate radar for trends, a book that has an aura of authority yet a true sense of what is cool. Something like Puffy, Xena, Quentin, Uma.

Then on the inside, page 333...

"Xena (Greek: stranger). Also, Xeena, Xina, Xyna. Whatever: How to trump the little princesses? Christen your own little warrior princess (chakra not included). Can the outrageous popularity of the grrl-power, sword-and-sworcery TV series Xena: Warrior Princess translate into an actual baby naming trend? Never underestimate a nation that's still naming its kids after Dynasty reruns. This is one to watch."

10 June 1999

*Many thanks to Melissa Good for forwarding this from Steve to everyone*

A note from the desk of

Steven L. Sears

Well, I never expected the response I got over two things:

1) My announcement that I would be leaving and
2) the response to the label "Tyldipops"! There were a lot more of those than I ever expected! (is someone collecting dues or something?) And I really really intended to answer every one of you who sent me a note. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I still entertain the idea of responding to all of you. Maybe during my forthcoming vacation I'll get a chance. But rest assured, I certainly have read all of them. And I do appreciate the sentiments. Sometimes it embarrasses me, but when that happens, I hop over to the netforum for a dose of cold water. :)

So, as the last month of my stay here at Renaissance winds down, things are beginning to feel strange. After 4 1/2 years and 98 episodes (by the time I leave), I've gotten used to my office. As an aside, many people don't understand the type of business Television is. And two things that are constant are unemployment and job change. In our business, we don't ask "What will you do if you're unemployed?" We ask "What do you do WHEN you're unemployed?" That's why careers in Television Writing are so short. In fact, a Writing career is considered to be between eight and ten years if you are very lucky. I've been doing this for fifteen years (I've been VERY lucky). But in all that time, Xena is the longest I've been on one show. Most of them have short runs or are canceled. Or, in this case, you have other opportunities presented to you (no, Virginia, there is no upper level "housecleaning" going on here). So, as you might guess, I've become fairly attached to Xena and Gabrielle. But all things come to an end.

<<sigh>>

Anyway, I figure the least I can do is to post an update every now and then about what's happening here and my last month at Renaissance. Nothing too detailed and certainly not a daily thing, but at least something. So, to that end, here is my list of things to do today:

1) Read new story by Chris Manheim.

2) Meet with rest of staff on "Back in the Bottle" story.

3) Begin teleplay for "Bottle" script.

4) Clean off my desk.

5) Pack Xena dolls around to take home.

6) Go through photos; get date for the prom.

7) Return call to Agent.

8) Watch tape of "Succession"

9) Call Rob Field, give hard time.

Now, of course, there is my OTHER list which I can't publish. Obviously, the one that mentions upcoming stuff and plot points (and my laundry). Again, thanks! And you'll hear from me again... soon.

Patti reports that the new action figures are now in

--Warloard Xena - she's dressed as the Conqueror from the Herc Armageddon ep. Costume and facial expression on this one is better than on the first 12" one.

--Roman Xena - dressed in the red flowing gown from WIR. Again, the resemblance to Lucy is better than it has been in the past (although this particular dollie is a bit too femme for my taste <g>).

--Ares - This dollie is my favorite of the bunch. A decent likeness to Kevin Smith, great muscle definition on the arms. My only complaint with this one is that there's a plastic vest thingy which comes down over his chest and because of the way the plastic bows, from the side it looks like he has D-cup sized boobies <g>.

--Gabrielle, Amazon Princess - Praise Zeus! She doesn't look like a Celine Dion wanna-be like the last one! And for once they didn't give her any superfluous weapons such as cross bows, daggers, whips, etc. - just the staff and a nifty Amazon mask.

A Connection between tv shows and eating disorders has been established in Fiji.   Reuters reports that:

"Some 74% of Fijian girls reported feeling ``too big or fat'' in a 1998 survey Becker conducted 38 months after the country's one television station began broadcasting. It airs British, New Zealand and U.S. programs such as ``Seinfeld,'' ''ER,'' ``Melrose Place'' and ``Xena: Warrior Princess.''

19 May 1999

For those who asked me about the Deadly Dreams montage (The Ides of March Series Montages) and where did that scene come from...I believe some stations that are airring this episode have edited out the scene of Xena covorting (not sure which word to use here <g> ) with Caeser on the bed and yes that is Lucy (well according to Sharon Delaney that is Lucy and not a body double).

More Marching Xenas! Tory reports:
On Sunday, June 27th, a large group of regular Xena Night at Meow Mix attendees (and some special guests from out of town) will be marching down Fifth Avenue in New York City as a "Marching Xena" Corps in this years Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade. Although many will be dressed as Xena, we will also be having other characters (in particular, Gabrielle) represented. For the less costume inclined, there are many people who want to just march with us in Xena T-shirts. I should point out, that although it's the Gay Pride Parade, many of our contigent are straight yet enthusiastic Xena fans.

16 May 1999

Steve Sears - the Exec Producer and Writer of so many wonderful wonderful episodes (my all time favourite being Between The Lines) is no longer with the show. Steve is now on another show! Good luck Steve - I know I will miss your great storytelling!

Another Bruce Campbell Update - this time from Josh Becker about the movie "Running Time"

"I have finally made a U.S./Canada video/DVD
deal on 'Running Time' with Anchor Bay
Entertainment, the same folks that just re-released
'Thou Shalt Not Kill . . . Except' and 'Evil Dead.' This
will be available in September or October. Since
this is a first-run release it will still not be cheap and
there will be at least 10 to 20 thousand of them in
their initial run. I still have 70 tapes left of the
version that is being sold here on the internet.
These will undoubtedly become collector's items
since there are only 200 in existence. I will happily
sign them for you. Get yours now, because when
they're gone, that's it." --Josh

The editor of Titans Magazine informed me that Titans Magazine has got the licence to produce the Official Xena and Hercules Magazines since Topps isn't doing them anymore. The schedule for the first magazine is in 5 months time and they have exclusive interviews coming up with Renee, Lucy and Hudson!
They also have access to the sets and the stars so we can look forward to something special! Stay tuned for more info!

March 1999

Dark Horse Comics will be taking over from Topps in the making of the Xena Comic. In addition to this the comic will be having a storyline that will carry on from the Season finale of Season 4 and beyond. Interesting stuff.

Ratings news - Sydney
The ratings for XWP are not good...they are bad. The ratings were released on Friday and they show that the show is beaten on Saturday nights by "Hey Hey, It's Saturday" (for non Aussies this show has been on TV for over 25 years and is a good show but I think needs to be sent out to pasture). Also beating XWP is "The Vicar of Dibly". XWP gets around 170000 Sydney viewers - that is way way down from last years 360000 where it was in 58th spot and it has now dropped to the 72nd position.

March 1999

Now for all those Vicki Pratt fans (Vicki is Queen Cyane from Adventures in the Sin Trade - here is where you can catch up with Vicki - She is going to be at the Muscle Magazine booth at the Arnold Fitness Classic - March 5 - 7, 1999 at the Veterans Memorial in Columbus, Ohio. There will be autographed swimsuit photos and muscle magazines.

December 1998

Seems Liz Friedman just got a promotion!

Many thanks to Judi for this news item

Renaissance ups Friedman

Liz Friedman has been upped to president of television for Renaissance Pictures, whose roster includes syndication hits "Xena: Warrior Princess" and "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys." Friedman's promotion comes amid other exec changes for the company owned by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. Patrick Moran was named vp production and Michael McDonald becomes director of development. Friedman moves into the post vacated in June by David Eick, who went to USA Network. She will oversee all aspects of development for network, syndication and cable projects. Friedman helped develop "Xena" and served as co-producer on that series and "Hercules."
