The following was posted by Renee to the Threadgills Message Board -
August 3, 2001
Hello there everyone. I wanted to take an opportunity to thank you all for the support you have shown to us on "Xena". What a great contribution to charities and "voice for good" over the years. I think that is still what continues to amaze me most about the effect the show has had around the world, and it was because of all of you. I'm happily waiting for our first baby. Feeling better than ever. Maybe just a bit grumpy at times for lack of sleep, but that is the miracle of birth, I suppose. Anyway, I'm sure you haven't seen the last of me, and until then thanks again for helping to make "Xena" one of the most unforgettable shows on television. Cheers, Renee

How does pregnancy affect a warrior? Renee O'Connor, who plays "Gabrielle" on "Xena" explains.

Renee O'Connor, "All I can think about is just how to survive the next six and a half months and become a mother. Lucy told me that when you become pregnant, suddenly nothing else matters in the world, and you're in this blissful state. And it has happened to me. Yep, all I can think about is this little person inside me, and how to remember every day that I'm on "Xena", and remember where we both were."

The whole interview, will air once every five hours at the top of the hour throughout the entire week of June 11. So check your tv guide for times in your area.

The following is from The Official Rubbernecking Web site

  • What surprised you about Renee (O'Connor)?
SEAN: Her manager gave her some big shoes to fill, built her up to be great in every way almost to a point where one would not believe it...she was.
ROSS: Renee did something I couldn't believe. Renee came by the office with her mom to say goodbye to us before she left Los Angeles. Knowing we were really tight on funds, she handed us the money we paid for her hotel bill. We told her she didn't have to do that, but she insisted; what a wonderful person. All of our stars, Corbin, Renee, Arye Gross and Debra Wilson, were a pleasure to work with. Corbin and Arye are true veterans of filmmaking. Their experience was very helpful. Renee was extra sweet. Debra Wilson's comedic 'MADness' in between takes was a much needed release for the entire crew

The following is from Sharon Delaney at the Official Xena Fan Club

I just received a packet of wedding photos from Renee to put in the next fan club newsletter. She didn't release any publicly and wishes only to share them with the fans. She and Steve also included a note they wanted me to pass along to everyone who wished them well on this truly happy occasion:

"Hello everyone! It's about time we dropped a note thanking "all ya'll" for the generosity you showed when we were married. The letters of congratulations were greatly appreciated. Also, raising money for charity was the perfect way to show your good wishes for us. We were truly amazed and humbled by such a force of benevolence. We had a wonderful wedding day, surounded by our families, and we hope to take a long, relaxing honeymoon sometime this year. Thanks for showing that again, the Xena fans ROCK!

Renee O'Connor & Steve Muir"

21 July 2000

If you are going hunting for the TV Guide with ROC on the cover you will need to do a little searching - there are 8 variant covers of the July 29 Issue of the American TV Guide.

18 July 2000

Earl Brown asked Alexandra Tydings about Motherhood - Many thanks to Earl for the report.

Alex's first shot of the episode was the part where Renee was dragged through the mud in the rain and while she watched it from off camera she broke down a bit, It looked as bad to her as it did to us. Yes it was Renee that Lucy drug all over the set! no stand (lay;-) ins. She was on a sheet of cardboard during the drag.

The blood was Strawberry jam.

While on Olympus they had the fog effect that was done with dry ice, dry ice is carbon dioxide which is not the safest thing to breath and Renee was laying in the fumes during the shoot. They stopped shooting several times to let her clear her head, there was also a concern by the medical/safety people on the set. She said Renee is such a trooper on set and a fun person to be with off set.

4 July 2000

It has been announced that Renee will be appearing at her 3rd only convention (and maybe her last) together with Lucy at the annual Xena and Hercules Convention - Pasadena. The convention is normally held in January but to accomodate both stars being there it has been moved to May 2001.

**

In the recent Official Xena Fan Club newsletter #11 - Renee is interviewed by Sharon Delaney

The following is excerpts from the interview and I will be having the entire transcript up soon.

INTERVIEW WITH RENEE By Sharon-Excerpts

(Asked about engagement)

"What happened when you told Lucy," I asked her. "I was at work before her that day and I had told her makeup artist, Vanessa. So I was changing when Lucy arrived and I could see out my window that Vanessa was whispering something to Lucy who started to yell," Renee laughed. "I ran out and we were both yelling. Then she pulled out this old-fashioned camera and took my picture while I was still yelling. When she showed me the photo later, it was priceless! It was so funny."

"In the Pasadena convention welcome video that you and Lucy did for us," I said, "Lucy mentioned she was getting back into shape." "She's been amazing," Renee said proudly. "She looks so great and she's such an inspiration to some women. Some people think if you have a baby, you'll never get your shape back again. That can be so discouraging. Lucy decided what she wanted to look like and worked hard. Now she looks better than ever. I tease her and say, 'You're putting a lot of pressure on all women after they've given birth.' " Renee laughed.

and

If there was one time this season the audience felt Gabrielle's pain of loss, it was in Eli'd death scene in "Seeds Of Faith". "When you screamed at Xena, 'Don't you blame me for this!' when she accused you of not defending Eli against Ares, the hairs stood up on the back of my neck!" I said to Renee, hoping I was adequately expressing the impact her work had had on me. "Do you remember that scene?" I asked her. "Oh, I do, yes, I do!" she laughed. "Eli's death was so different from Joxer's for Gabrielle. I think it was because there was so much leading up to it. She knew he was going to sacrifice himself and that it was for the faith of the world."

"I don't think I've ever heard Gabrielle that angry," I told her. "It was an intense day," Renee said with a sigh. "It was really hard for me. I was telling the director, Garth Maxwell, that it was probably the most difficult day of filming I'd ever had in my life. And the hours were so long. "We started off first thing in the morning leading up to the initial conflict between Eli and Ares through the part where Eli turns Gabrielle around. We spent all day working on that up until the part where Xena comes in. And I was crying over him the whole time until about seven o'clock that night!" "Timothy Omundson (Eli) said at a convention that you had to cry the whole day," I said. "He couldn't believe what you went through. After filming something so emotionally intense, can you just walk away and go home without it having any effect on you?"

"You feel terrible. You also feel a bit ridiculous," she laughed. "I still find it embarrassing to show such strong emotions in front of the crew. You really have to trust that you're not making a complete idiot of yourself. And if you are, so what. You have to keep reminding yourself it doesn't matter that you're crying in front of all hese people. So I had to keep working against that all day. And at the end, you take a hot bath, walk away and it's over. Go home to your family and hug and kiss them and be happy you're alive and that your life is good."

"Most people when they're really upset, go off by themselves," I said, thinking out loud. "Right, they don't like to cry in front of other people," Renee agreed. "Someone might scream like that, but they'd do it in a place where they feel comfortable and safe to let out the rage, sadness and loss. But Garth really wanted Gabrielle to cry out loud and have that big shriek at the end that Xena hears when she's on the bridge. I just didn't want to do that. I hate it when Gabrielle let's go like that. Then I thought, the show's so stylized, it's not reality."

"It may not have been fun," I said to her, "but you did a great job."

"Oh, thanks, Sharon," she said warmly. "The exchange between Xena and Gabrielle at the end of the scene," I recited... "Xena:People like Eli wouldn't exist if people like us didn't defend them when they won't defend themselves. "Gabrielle: So Ares was right? The whole future is shaped by warriors? "...Xena was speechless!" "Wasn't that great?" Renee said excitedly. "It was so good. Lucy and I enjoyed doing that scene because we could really get our teeth into it."

"Have You seen the photo of you at Eli's funeral pyre?" I asked her.

"Where you've got the scarf around your head? It's one of the most beautiful shots of Gabrielle I've ever seen."

"Obviously very uncomfortable about tearing up, I condensed it. I hit my mark and stayed there for about two seconds and then walked away. We could only do one take because I was damaging all the fresh sand. But when I saw Geoff's photo, he had captured what we didn't see in the episode-the sense of loss. I thought Geoff did such a great job catching that moment."

"Are you going to direct next season?" I asked, getting ready to wind down the interview. "I hope so. I'd like to." Renee said. "Rob's doing his best to make it work out for me. He's trying to write me out of an episode so I have a proper prep time. That's not the easiest thing to do now. Especially since Ted's not around anymore next season."

"How do you feel about the final season coming up?" I asked gently.

Renee thought for a moment. I think for Lucy and I, as soon as we begin the last season, every day on set will be precious to us. We will know that we'll never have an opportunity to be together again as a family with the crew. We're just going to do whatever we can to make it our best season. I know Lucy's trying to put in as much time as she can discussng beat sheets with Rob as the episodes originate. I think the passion is there to try and go out on a high."

29 May 2000

Claire Stansfield (Alti) said at the recent Orlando Convention that Renee did NOT get married yet to Steve. She indicated that the wedding will be held in Texas.
Many thanks to BJ for that news.

The following is from Sharon Delaney

Thought you might enjoy hearing what Renee had to say about her singing in Lyre, Lyre. This is from an interview I did with her for fan club newsletter #11 which just went to the printer.

The next item on my list of questions concerned "Lyre, Lyre" and everyone wondering if Renee did any of her own singing. This elicited a very large burst of laughter. "I had to audition for my own singing voice in that episode," Renee finally got out. "And it was the most humbling experience." I wondered how the subject had come up. "I brought it up that I'd like to try and do some of the singing myself. I knew they had brought in the same girl who dubbed me in 'The Bitter Suite.' So I went in and sang for Joe (Lo Duca - Xena composer). He was very kind, but it was the most bizarre experience. I started off completely embarrassed and then ended up just singing as loud as I could and having a good time."

"What parts did you do yourself?" I asked.

"The bit in the marketplace during the 'Telephone Song.' And backup during 'War.' Susan Wood sang the final song, 'Peace In The Valley' and another number that didn't make it into the show, 'We Can Work It Out.'  That was a duet with Xena."

14 March 2000

Renee was interviewed by the Quad City Times by Pam Shafer on the set in New Zealand
It does contain a picture of Renee in costume (not her regular one) from the episode Antony & Cleopatra In the article she reveals her plans to leave New Zealand to further her career and is also doing theatre work in Auckland.

Rubbernecking to feature in 1999 Independent Feature

Rubbernecking was selected to premiere in the
"Works-In-Progress" section of the 1999 Independent Feature

a premier event for independent filmmakers, buyers,

applications from around the world in a fiercely competitive
industry, Rubbernecking was one of only ten films chosen to
be featured in the "Works-In-Progress" category.

Held at the Angelika Film Center from September 17-24th,
Xena fans and IFP members in NY are invited to hang around
the directors and witness Renee O'Connor in the premiere of
Rubbernecking.

roc99th.jpg (8598 bytes)The Official Renee O'Connor Fan Club page has the second part of an interview that first appeared in the newsletter for the club on their website. An excerpt from the interview - Renee's friendship with Lucy:

Reneé: Our friendship has evolved. Lucy has had an enormous effect on my life. It's amazing. She's an incredibly passionate woman who's also an intellectual..

Reneé: Sometimes, I think, other actresses come on the set and may feel threatened by our friendship. And it's not that Lucy and I should or shouldn't act a certain way, we're just very close! We're always talking about our lives. Some of it is gossip, maybe a little meddling. But most of the time, it's about parallel feelings that we are having in our lives. I've had wonderful girlfriends before - and people I love as sisters - but Lucy is more than that. I have so much respect for her. And she's someone I'm inspired by.

Music video time!
Jett has created a great Gabrielle music video! The blurb on the site says

Gabrielle wanted to see the world and be just like Xena. But emerging from a naive peasant girl to an Amazon Queen came with a price that even Gabrielle didn't see coming. A heart-felt video that takes you on the painful journey that our favorite bard has taken in order to be with the one person that her heart would follow faithfully. Set to the music of Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn", we offer you this commentary look at Gabrielle's life (so far).

Weekend obviously didn't suspect what impact it would have. During that time TPTB wanted everyone to keep mum about Gabrielle's fate. Also ghosts don't get footroot and get sick from lousy cooking!

Regarding the rumours that Renee is engaged to Steve: NOT TRUE. This is from Sharon Delaney who has checked.

The Official Renee O'Connor Fan Club is closing down. Momma ROC (aka Sandra Wilson) has been sending out letters stating that from 31 December 1998 the club will no longer be around. This, folks, is NOT a rumour - it will be happening.
