Thank you very much

LONELY
Our story opens in a cargo bay, two officers are talking about the
events of the day.
“How did we get in this mess? We should be prepared for these kinds
of
things.” One started, a slight English/ Indian accent detected.
“You mean we should be prepared against silver robots, who are
invincible to our phasers, and who are bent on taking over the station.
I’m just glad Molly, Kako and Yousho are still on Bajor.” And Irish
voice answered. These two Starfleet officers were none other than Chief
Miles O’Brien, and Doctor Julian Bashir.
“Yes, well unfortunately I don’t have the luxury of worrying about
someone. All chances of that occurring have surely sailed”
“Don’t worry we’ll find someone for you. You never know she could even
fall out of the sky.”
“Well, that could very well happen in our line of work”
“Chief, Doctor, I don’t think the whole room wants to hear your problems
right now” The next person over started, the Captain of the station.
“Besides” a woman on the other side started, “I don’t think that even
a
woman out of the sky could do anything for Julian’s problem”
“Will all of you please be quiet, we must conserve our strength to
come
up with a plan to defeat our captors.” A few moments passed “But Jadzia
is right about the woman from the sky.” It seemed the entire senior
staff of Deep Space Nine was in the cargo bay, prisoners of the robots.
Just then a soft noise occurred, it started to get louder. Within
seconds a large 20th Century English police box materialized in the
cargo bay. All the occupants of the cargo bay slowly got up to see
what
was happening. Then a voice from inside. Then two. The door opened
and
two people emerged.
TIME TRAVELERS/REUNION
Two people emerged, first a young woman wearing black pants and a blue
shirt. Then a male, older wearing plaid trousers, a brown jacket, and
a
matching Panama hat.
“I can’t understand how you always win, Doctor, I think you’re
cheating.” said the girl
“Me cheating? You know me so well, Ace.” Laughingly said the second.
“So where do you think we’ve landed?”
“I don’t know. Well, it’s umm…”
Just then the Klingon jumped out in front of them and yelled, “Who
are
you!”
The two jumped back frightened. Then the man came up to him looked
the
large man in the eye. “Worf? Lieutenant Commander Worf?
“Do I know you?” The puzzled Klingon asked, confused
“Worf, it’s me, the Doctor.” the Doctor said going into a thoughtful
like state, “Ah, I’ve regenerated since you last saw me, perhaps that’s
why you don’t recognize me”
Another voice then started coming from the box
“Doctor what’s it like out there? Oh, never mind I’ll just come out.”
A tall woman came out of the box, beautiful full figured, wearing blue
pants, and a matching ballet style shirt. Her eyes searching around
the
room until she found her old friend staring right at her. “Worf!” The
girl ran up to the man and gave him a hug. To the astonishment of his
crewmates, he returned the emotion
“Larissa? Larissa Janeway! You’ve grown up!”
“Yes, I have, but you as well. Red looks quite good on you. What’s
your
new position?”
“I am Commander of the USS Defiant.”
“Well,” Chief O’Brian started coming out of hiding, “If it isn’t the
little Leprechaun. It’s good to see you again Larissa. Molly was just
asking about you the other day.”
“Really how is she?”
“Oh, she’s fine”
“And Kako?”
“She’s fine too, we’ve just had a baby boy.”
“That’s wonderful! Where are they? There’s so much I want to tell you”
“They’re on Bajor right now…” He noticed her confused face “…Because
of
the war.”
“War?”
“Yes, Larissa” said the Doctor cutting in, “About a year or two after
you left Earth, Starfleet, and the rest of the Alpha Quadrant got into
a
war with the Dominion.”
“Ah yes, the people from the Gamma Quadrant. But, the Dominion never
held these people hostage in this manor.” Questioned Larissa. “If the
Dominion isn’t in control of the…where are we exactly?”
“Space Station, Deep Space Nine. Excuse me for cutting in, it’s just
I’m
in charge here. It’s definitely not the Dominion.”
“Can you give us a description of who it is? Perhaps we can help” Ace
said sounding optimistic
“They’re like the Borg, robots, only they’re silver colour and don’t
assimilate. They just kill…”
“And drone on about how they will make you they’re slaves?” Ace said,
already estimating who the culprits were
“Yes that’s it. They took over the entire station, in a matter of
minutes”
“Did they have silver crowns on? You know a really big head and curved
bars coming from the bottom to the top?”
“Yes, that’s exactly it. D you know who they are and what they want?”
“Cybermen.” Larissa said coming to a conclusion
GETTING TO KNOW YOU
The Doctor looked at his two colleagues
“Larissa get all the gold out of the TARDIS, I want to be ready just
in
case.” He turned to the Captain “Captain, do you have access to any
weapons? Anything will do”
“No, and it won’t do any good, they are invincible to even the highest
setting on our phasers.”
Larissa came out, carrying a bag of gold powder. “That’s because phaser
blast won’t make a dent. Perhaps if I adjusted some Borg Nanoprobes”
“How many can you spare?” the Doctor asked her, concerned
“Almost enough to cover everyone in the room.”
“Borg Nanoprobes?” Major Kira asked confused
“Yes, unfortunately Larissa was assimilated a few years ago”
“But there hasn’t been a Borg attack in seven years!” Dax said confused
“Yes, but…” the Doctor started
“…What the Doctor was getting to” interrupted Larissa “is the fact
that
I was born in a situation where the Borg were a constant threat, I’m
not
exactly from this part of space ”
“Yes, well this is unimportant to the situation.” He noticed a medical
doctor in the crowd “Ah; a Doctor, and what would your name be?” The
Doctor said, disturbing the conversation
“Oh, I’m Doctor Julian Bashir, Chief Medical officer.”
“Speaking of names, what are we to call you three?” asked the Captain
“Oh, how terribly rude of me. This is Ace, that’s Larissa Janeway,
and
I’m the Doctor”
“Doctor Who?” Nog asked confused. Out of the corner of his eye, he
saw
Dr. Bashir and Larissa eye each other, each checking the other out.
“Yes, you’re getting the picture.”
“I’m Captain Sisko, this is my security chief Odo; my first officer
Major Kira; my son Jake, and Engsin Nog. Worf would you like to
introduce Jadzia?”
“This is my wife Jadzia Dax.” Worf said to the Doctor and Ace
“Nice to meet you all, but I’m afraid we have no time for the name
game,
let’s just get this fight overwith with as few casualties as possible.”
The girl unloaded more supplies from the strange box. The group stared
at the contents of the box
“Ah very efficient Larissa, why don’t you take charge of the situation,
I expect that you already have some sort of plan.”
THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY
Larissa gave a look to the Doctor “You know me so well Doctor. Captain
do you have a Commline in here? Any kind of panel will do”
“Yes,” started Bashir, “But it’s damaged. Would you still like me to
show you?”
“Please” answered Larissa with a cool sound in her voice. The two walked
over to the other side of the room
“As you can see…” Bashir started with a superior flare in his voice
“The main line is completely done. But the secondary system is only
encrypted.”
“Very good.” Bashir was surprised at her intelligence “Unfortunately
the encryption could take a month to decrypt.”
“For a human” The girl stated, already starting to decrypt the screen
“I was under the impression that you were human”
“Fortunately I’m rather good at giving impressions. Let me have a go
of
it”
Bashir was amazed at the speed at which she decrypted the panel.
“If you’re wondering how, my Uncle John and Aunt Cathy taught me how
to
decrypt like this.”
“John and Cathy what, I’ve never heard of them,”
“I don’t expect you to, they live in ‘F’ dimension.”
“Then how…”
“That ship that I arrived in is called a TARDIS, Time And Relative
Dimensions In Space. Although I am from this universe. The terms “Aunt”
and “Uncle” don’t necessarily apply to blood relatives. There, finished.
Now we can open a Comm link with whomever we want.”
Bashir looked at her, feeling a fancy for her. “Now all we have to
worry
about are the door, and the robots, or rather the Cybermen.” smirked
Bashir
“The task does seem rather small” Larissa sarcastically replied as
she
got up. “Now for this door, everybody stand back.” she got up and tried
to walk through it. The force field surrounding it flung her back.
“I guess that didn’t work” the young Ferengi sounding like he was going
to give up.
Larissa trying not to notice the comment got up and started thinking.
However Bashir and Worf, noticing that Larissa was slightly annoyed
by
him, pulled him to the side for a word.
“Behave yourself Engsin. I have known Larissa for many years, she is
a
warrior, and if one way doesn’t work she thinks of another way to solve
the problem.
“Learn to watch what you say, Nog she’s our best hope right now.”
“Would you two please be quiet and let me think?” shouted Larissa
obviously annoyed, she brushed her hair back
“Out of ideas?” asked Ace sympathetically, “You do look kind of tired”
“I’m starting to feel a headache coming on,” Larissa started rubbing
her
head. “Hey wait a minute! I’ve got an idea” She leaped up and started
looking around the cargo bay
“ What are you looking for?” The Doctor asked puzzled
“Wait,” she said going up to the Major’s Comm badge. “Excuse me, but
may
I borrow a piece of your Commbadge?”
“Sure if it will help us get out of here,” Neryss said giving her the
equipment
Quickly Larissa took her knife and cut the metal object open. “Bingo!
We’re going to get out of here.”
“With a Commbadge?” asked a puzzled Shape-Shifter
“Major, I have to take it apart, is that alright?’’
“As long as we get out of here”
“I think I know where you’re going” Ace started
A QUICK GOOD-BYE
Very carefully Larissa took a fiber from the machine, handed it to Ace.
She motioned for her to move her neck to the side, and move her hair,
she very delicately adjusted some nodes on the Borg appendage. The
whole
room looked at the operation with wonder and awe, never saying a word.
During this silent period everyone was making up his or her own opinions
of the threesome. The Captain had decided that these people weren’t
very
conventional, but certainly welcome. The Major had decided that the
Prophets had sent them as their warriors. Nog had decided that this
person could be a role model for him. Jadzia trusted Worf’s opinion,
that this was warrior worthy of their friendship. Chief O’Brien thinking
of how much Larissa had grown since he last saw her. Bashir, however
had
a totally different opinion of her. She was as intelligent as he was,
with an attitude that kept him begging for more, and above all, she
was
the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. The room was silent until
a
very soft “There” indicating that the operation was finished.
Quickly and quietly the girl emerged from her position, and headed
toward the door to the cargo bay.
She lightly touched the force field with her hand, letting the
Nanoprobes within her body adapt to the frequency of the invisible
wall.
She touched it again and it disappeared. With a quiet “Yes” she moved
away from the door and toward the console. She punched in some numbers,
and moved back into the group. The field around the door fluctuated
and
then disappeared completely.
“There you go, all fixed. I expect that you could win the battle now.”
Suddenly a premonition overtook her.
The Doctor and Ace reacted “Larissa what is it?”
“I can feel it, someone’s here.” Her face revealed a frightened look.
“Time to leave Doctor.”
“Who’s here Larissa?” The doors to the Cargo bay opened, three Cybermen
walked in.
“Into the TARDIS!” she pushed them into the box, not getting in herself.
The Cybermen started shooting at the TARDIS, but it materialized away
just in time. A man walked into the cargo bay, a man the Enterprise
crew
knew well, Lore.
LORE IS IN CONTROL, BUT NOT FOR LONG
“Hold your fire!” the android’s voice, yelled.
“Who are you?” Captain Sisko’s asked
“He’s Lore, Lt. Commander Data’s brother.” Larissa replied, dusting
herself off from her fall.
“You know me well. Is that you Larissa?” the android moved closer to
her “Well Larissa Janeway, I never thought I’d see you again. My you’ve
grown up.” She remained silent, he continued with his ‘reunion’.
“I bet it was you who shut down my force field. I always knew you’d
be a
smart one, smarter than that Crusher boy; although I quite liked his
flair for insanity at his end.”
“Your point, if you please”
“Why don’t you join me, you would make an excellent second.” He grabbed
her hand, coaxing her to agree
“Go to hell!” she grabbed her hand back
“Full of spirit too. You posses many qualities don’t you Larissa?”
“I would prefer it if you called me Miss Janeway, my name is for my
friends.” He grabbed her close to him
“Yes, you will be my second,” He pushed her forward; she didn’t move
any
further. “Guards take Miss Janeway to the bridge.” he placed his hand
on
her shoulder.
“As the Cybermen say, Resistance is useless.” He still kept his
hand on
her shoulder. Big mistake!
She elbowed him, he did not shutter. She flipped him over her shoulder,
while at the same time readying her assimilation tubules.
“Resistance is futile, not useless!” His evil body was assimilated
bit
by bit. The she completed a row of flips towards the box of weapons,
grabbed a crossbow, arrow and she fired it at the Cybermen. They all
fell with a single arrow.
Then relaxing, “You may all come out now,” she said to the group who
had
gone into hiding
Suddenly the Intercom to the Cargo Bay started booming
“Residence of Space Station Deep Space Nine of “B” Dimension, you are
now the property of the Cybermen. Half of you will become our slaves,
and the other half
will become Cybermen. Resistance is useless. That is all.”
“You used a gold arrow on them?” Asked Dr. Bashir, ignoring the message
“Yes, they are allergic to gold. I don’t know why though.”
“I didn’t realize that they had such annoying voices. I wish I hadn’t
fixed the communications console this morning .” Chief O’Brien muttered
“Let’s not dwell on useless muttering” Kira said “Now we have to
concentrate on a plan.”
“Wait a minute, that’s a good idea. Think about it, they use the main
consoles. If we could cover them with some kind of gold…” Larissa
started
“Then they would undoubtedly be finished!” Jadzia said happily
“I think it’s an excellent idea!” Sisko agreed
“But how are we going to get all the consoles on the station covered
with gold?” Nog said doubtfully
“I think I can help you with that. Jadzia what is the atomic frequency
of gold?”
“0.007 I… think. Why?”
“Because if I can get my Nanoprobes to emit that frequency, than I
could
“assimilate” the station and every console would be emitting that
frequency.”
“But you would have to either exert every Nanoprobe in your body or
stay
plugged into the console the entire time” Chief O’Brien said nervously
“But either one could kill you!” Bashir said
“Maybe” she said coolly
“Do you have a better idea Doctor?” Worf said to the medical officer
“Fine, let’s not listen to the Doctor, he doesn’t know what he’s talking
about!” Julian said sarcastically. Worf couldn’t argue with this,
he
looked at Larissa; she knew what she had to do. She walked up to Julian
“Doctor, I know what it is to worry about someone, believe me I’ve
done
my share. But you know that you’ve also got to take risks.”
“I know you’re right, I take those kinds of risks everyday. I won’t
stop
you if you think it’s the only way, just be careful”
She smiled at him, a smile he treasured. “Thank you, Doctor.”
VICTORY
She took off her appendage, adjusted it, and replaced on her neck
“You’ll monitor my vitals right?”
“Oh, of course, otherwise I wouldn’t let you do this.”
“You wouldn’t be able to stop me.”
And with that she plugged into the console. Within ten seconds the
console gleamed of the goldish colour.
Then the force fields fluctuated, the lights flickered, and the screams
of Cybermen dying were heard all through the station. It was as if
chaos
had erupted in a volcano of light, energy, and sound. Larissa remained
motionless throughout the entire chaotic episode. Bashir barely noticed
the setting; he was monitoring her bodily functions.
“How is she Doctor?” the Captain yelled above the tortured screams
of
his captors
“She’s fine for the moment, body temperature normal, blood pressure
nor…
blood pressure exceeding normal perimeters, it’s rising, 20, 25, 36,
it’s going through the roof!
“Unplug her Mr. Worf!”
“I am attempting to do so! I cannot she’s locked me out! I cannot stop
her!”
“Here…” Chief O’Brien said cutting in, “I’m attempting a feedback.
It’s
working…there that should do it”
Suddenly he computer threw him away from the console. Green energy
waves
started disappearing into Larissa’s assimilation tubes. The console
blew
up! Larissa was thrown backward, into Julian’s arms.
“Is she dead Doctor?” Nog asked fearing the answer; they all crowded
around the two.
“No” he said softly, trying to hide his relief at the news “Just knocked
out. I can wake her with a hypospray”
“Do it Doctor, I want her awake just in case we get anymore of those
robots in here”
JUST FRIENDS, FOR A LITTLE WHILE ANYWAY
“Yes sir” he picked her up, rested her head on his lap. He gently tuned
her neck to one side, administering the hypospray on the other. She
fluttered her eyes open. She looked up at him, like she’d never seen
him
before. She smiled at him; it fulled him with joy.
“See Doctor, risk isn’t such a bad thing.” She touched her head “Oh,
I
feel like I’ve been put through the ringer! What happened, did it work?”
Julian helped her to her feet, balancing her
“You were victorious!” Worf said proudly, satisfaction loomed around
the
room.
“Good, I want to get out of this room!” Kira said happily.
Larissa stopped, where would she go? The Doctor was gone, Worf and
the
other’s had their own lives. Julian realized she was feeling out of
place. He walked over to her
“Umm, Miss Janeway, I am very interested in those Nanoprobes, could
you
by any chance tell me a bit more about them?”
“I’d be happy to Doctor. You can call me Larissa if you like.”
“Thank you, that’s very nice, my name’s Julian.” They walked out of
the
cargo bay together. Worf noticed, he became angry, and moved to stop
the
two.
“Larissa, may I have a word with Doctor Bashir?” the two stopped in
front of him, the energy of their conversation flowed out of them.
“Umm, sure Worf. See you later Julian?” She walked down the hall,
catching up with Jadzia. The two started laughing. The scene turns
back
to Worf and Bashir
“So what is it Worf?” The angry Klingon picked him up and pinned him
against a wall
“Stay away from her Doctor. You don’t deserve her.”
“What… what are you talking about? I just met the girl!”
“You heard me Doctor, stay away from her!” he put him down again, and
walked away. Julian stood there, wondering why he was protecting her
so.
He shrugged it off and walked down the corridor.
Worf continued walking down the hallway, convinced that what he did
was
just in defense, it was what any adopted father would have done. He
turned a corner, Larissa was waiting for him.
“Larissa, it is good to see you, I was hoping that…” She went at him,
pinning him against the wall, angry as a tigress. Julian walked by
this
scene amazed that someone was actually pinning Worf, he quickly backed
up, and listened from around the corner.
“Worf, you have no right.”
“I was only doing what a father should, or in our case an adopted
father.”
“But I’m older now, I’m supposed to be friends with people.”
“Being ‘friends’ are not Doctor Bashir’s objectives.”
“So? It wouldn’t make a difference. I like Julian, and who knows,
someday I could like him like that.” She put him down “Worf, I’m
nineteen years old, I’m supposed to be experiencing relationships.
But
then again, I can’t blame you for wanting to protect me. It’s what
parents are supposed to do. Just you can’t go after him like you want
to.”
“I understand, I apologize. I promise I will not go after Doctor Bashir
anymore, but if her crosses the line…”
“Then I’ll deal with that. You catch up with Jadzia.” Worf left, Larissa
stayed. “Julian, you can come out now, he’s gone.” Julian came out
from
his hiding spot
“You know, this has been an interesting day, I’ve never seen Worf like
that…”
“…Or apologize to anyone?”
“That too. Thank you for standing up for me, but you didn’t have to.
Are
you two really related?”
“That is a story for another day, common let’s go experiment with those
Nanoprobes.” The two went down the corridor together, enjoying each
other’s company.
< Two days later>
THE AFTERMATH
Major Kira walked up to Captain Sisko’s office, she walked in
“Captain, there’s a Priority One message from Starfleet. It’s Admiral
Keaton.”
The chair remained unmoved
“Sir, Admiral Keaton is on subspace.” Then realizing that he was deep
in
thought “Sir we’re all trying to make up our minds about the last few
days. Now the Admiral is going to tell you the future of that young
woman, and I think you should hear it.”
“Put it though”
The chair turned toward the laptop computer on the desk.
“Admiral.”
“Captain Sisko, I am about to give you the decision of Starfleet
Command, regarding the fate of Larissa Janeway. Is there anything you’d
like to say before I give it to you.”
“No, sir”
“Good, it is the counsel’s decision that Larissa is the best chance
we
ever may have to defeat the Dominion. She’s an intelligent, acrobatic
alien with who knows what up her sleeve. She should be encouraged to
join Starfleet. I’ll come out there tomorrow to oversee her abilities,
and make sure 100% that she’s up to our standards. From now on any
information about Larissa Janeway will be incoded in the newest
algorithms. Understand?”
“Yes sir, what is to be her rank?
“Lieutenant Commander. Alright that’s it, Starfleet out”
Someone rang to get into Sisko’s office, he didn’t answer, he was too
deep in thought. They rang again, then finally Jadzia walked into the
office. “Well, how did it go?”
“They want her instated into Starfleet, they think she may help us
with
the war.”
“That’s not going to go over well.”
“No kidding, but orders are orders. What field should she be assigned
to?
“Why don’t to try her out at everything, she seems to be very
intelligent.
“Perhaps the infirmary first? See what kind of miracles she can work.”
“Julian will like that, I wonder what Larissa will say.”
“ That is a mystery. I better get her in here. Sisko to Janeway…”
As the Captain was deciding her fate, Larissa was teaching the Doctor
how to revive someone using Nanoprobes. The Doctor was becoming fonder
and fonder of her, and he longed for a chance to tell her.
Larissa, was also finding feelings for him, but knew it could never
be
anything more than that, she had to do something first. She glanced
down
at her ring, a permanent reminder of her role.
“So, all you do is inject the Nanoprobes, when they’re emitting a
frequency of 0.687, monitor them, and then extract them 18 hours later.”
“You do learn fast Doctor, I’ll replicate some for you, just be careful
with them. They are still Borg Nanoprobes.”
“Well you’re such a wonderful teacher. Would you like to maybe go like
to join me for dinner tonight? No, you probably want to have a talk
with
Worf or Chief O’Brien or…”
“…No, that sounds… interesting. Besides, I don’t think I could stand
another ounce of blood wine.”
“Good, meet you in Quarks at about 18:00?”
“Sisko, to Janeway” her new Commbadge was paging her. Their conversation
was put on hold.
“Janeway here, go ahead.”
“I was wondering if you could come to my office, there is something
we
need to discuss. Sisko out.”
She turned to Julian “I better go, see you in Quarks in two hours?”
He
nodded
A STARFLEET OFFICER
Larissa walked in the Captain’s office in Ops, feeling a bit nervous.
He
asked her to sit down
“Miss Janeway, may I ask what you intend to do now that the Doctor
is
gone?”
“Well I don’t really know sir, I was thinking of staying on the station,
if that’s alright.”
“Oh, anything inparticular you wanted to do?”
“No, not really. I thought I might work in the science lab as a
scientist. I’ve got some very good ideas, but other than that nothing
really, why?”
“Well, I’ve been speaking to Starfleet, reporting the events of the
last
few days, and they took interest with you.”
“I don’t understand sir.”
“They offered you a post here, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
You could specialize in any field you wanted…” she stood up, backed
away, trying to consider everything
“But… I haven’t even been through the Academy, no proper training.
”
“We’ve decided that judging from the show you put on in the cargo bay
you have intelligence, you’re an athlete of great ability, and you
have
all the knowledge of the Borg Collective. Now that’s extensive training.
As well, I would like to add on a personal note that you are the most
interesting young woman that has ever come aboard the station.”
“Different is what you mean, you have no idea how different. Can I
have
a day to think about it? Please?”
“Of course. I’ve taken the liberty of drawing up a basic schematic
of
the station’s design, and if you’re going to stay on DS9, as an officer
or as a scientist, you’re going to need some proper quarters. I’ve
taken
the liberty of finding you one, here.” He handed her a pad, containing
all the knowledge she needed. “Dismissed”
LARISSA’S ROOM
She left, headed towards her quarters. Habitat ring section 10. She
found the room, opened the door. The room was bare, very bare, the
walls
screamed out how bare they were. There were two adjoining rooms to
the
one large one, they also bare. She lifted her arm, her finger out to
a
point. A beam of golden light streamed out, and the room was instantly
transformed. The living room with an Italian flair, white couch,
white
chair, with Celtic throw. A wooden truck in the middle, a red and brown
rug completing the central area. The dining room, was in a canopy,
with
grapevines dripping down from it, the wooded table, covered with a
navy
tablecloth and a vase of roses. A few other items decorated the room,
a
piano, a few paintings, and a hat stand. She moved into the first room,
zap! A futon couch in beige leather, a red coloured throw on this one.
The walls were lined with shelves full of books, the window with a
hundred thick, assorted coloured candles. On to her bedroom, this room
was to reflect a gentle Greek goddess’s own. A bed covered with a white
veil white sheets and white pillows. A dresser of mahogany wood, perfume
bottles and other items gracing the top. The rest of the room was
candles, more than a few, paintings and a white 18th century armchair.
All done with the strength of her power. The words she had spoken to
the
Captain seemed to echo in her ears
“Different, you don’t know how much.”
Julian Bashir was sitting in his office when he felt something flow
through him. There was another Q on board the station, but who?
THE DATING GAME
It was 18:00, and Larissa still hadn’t made up her mind. She left her
room, to meet Julian as they planned. She was beginning to see in him,
a
trustworthy friend, and maybe someday a husband. She knew the husband
part had to come when the ring came off. The ring was a permanent
reminder that her life was not her own until she had fulfilled her
destiny, the problem was she didn’t know what exactly it was.
She walked down into the Promenade, and into the infirmary. Julian
was
recalabrating a tricorder. He looked up at her with a smile.
“Ready to go?”
“As ready as ever. What are you doing?”
He got up and showed her the tricorder “I’ve remodified the tricorder
to
pick up any kind of cell deterioration, this way we can better prevent
Kipples disease.”
“I’m guessing the cure will be the mechanical devices running through
my
blood stream at this very moment.”
“You catch on very quickly. Have you ever thought of being a doctor
or
scientist”
“I’m both already. But if you mean the professional kind, as in a
Starfleet officer, I was offered a commission this morning.”
“Really. Are you going to take it?” He secretly hoped she wouldn’t
that
way she couldn’t be transferred away from him.
“I don’t know, the job was for a Lt. Commander.”
“Do you know where you’ll be posted?”
She nodded politely. “Here as a matter of fact. Although I don’t know
what field I am to work in. Admiral Nelson is coming out here tomorrow
to test me.”
“Well, I know you will pass with flying colours. We need someone like
you to help with the war.”
“I was going to ask you about that. What kind of casualties have we
had?
How many battles have we lost?”
“A lot on both fronts. I say we have lost about thirty percent of the
people, and about forty-five percent of the battles. It does not look
good. Any more questions?”
“Just one, what kind of food did you have in mind?” She said with a
smile. They walked out of the infirmary and over to Quarks. Strange
though, the bar was closed, and a pad was outside the door.
“Closed for yearly maintenance”
“Oh darn, well is there anywhere else you’d like to go? There’s a
Klingon restaurant down the Promenade.” Larissa glanced behind her.
“I’ve got a better idea. How about some home cooking?” She pulled him
over to the Bajoran market. Picked out some tomatoes, red and green
pepper, two steaks, and a kilo of shrimp. He looked at her confused.
“Trust me.” Was all she said to him. They walked down into the Habitat
Ring, and into her quarters.
“Nice place, but how did you decorate it so quickly?” She had by this
time walked into her kitchen, and had started unloading the groceries.
“Magic. Doctor, do you by any chance like fahitas?”
“What’s that, some kind of exotic alien food from a planet you landed
on?”
She laughed, while dicing the vegetables. “Yes, it’s from the exotic
planet Earth. It’s an old Mexican food.” She reached for a large frying
pan above her. “Here let me,” Julian got it for her, looking deeply
into
her eyes. She pulled out, taking the pan from him. She placed
the pan
over a counter top, then poured some olive oil into it.
“Well then you are in for a treat. Fahitas are quite good.”
“Is there anything I can help with? I don’t want you to do all the
work.”
“Sure, see those steaks? I want you to cut them up into strips. Then
when you’re done throw them into the pan with the shrimp.”
“But there is no pan with shrimp.”
“Not yet anyway. Start cutting Doctor,”
“Just like an operation, only this time I can be a mad doctor.” He
said,
jokingly
“Just don’t get to angry at the patient, we still have to eat him or
her.” She reached for another pan, added garlic, butter, olive oil,
and
the shrimp.
“There, now just add it to the shrimp?”
“You’ll be a chef in no time.”
“ Maybe, but never as good as you. You know this chef would like to
add
something to the dinner.” She looked at him. He walked over to the
replicator. “White wine, Chardonnay, chilled” A bottle appeared on
the
platform. He opened the bottle, and poured some of it in the meat,
and
some in the veggies.
“So we are to be drunk on the food tonight, that’s a twist on the
everyday.”
“I’m an original.” He reached for two glasses above her head, and poured
them both a drink. “To the first meal I ever assisted in making.”
She laughed “Cheers” the glasses clanged together, and they both took
a
sip. She glanced down at the meal. “Looks about done, I’ll get the
plates.”
“And I’ll clear the table.” She dished out the veggies and meat onto
the
same plate in a tasteful design.
“I almost forgot.” She walked over to the replication “Ten flour soft
fahita raps, warm” A plate holding ten white pancakes appeared. She
brought it over to the table.
“So how do we eat this stuff?”
“Well first you take a taco, then you put whatever you want in the
middle, wrap and eat. Like this.” She quickly fulled hers with steak,
shrimp, tomatoes, then she wrapped it together to eat it. The meal
continued for a half an hour, Julian went on about his life, what had
happened, what it was like here on the station. When she asked Larissa
about hers, she replied “Too long, too involving, too gruesome.”
“That was delicious Larissa, now I make my famous replicated apple
pie.”
“Sounds original, from an original person.”
“You know me so well, I even have my own original tea blend.”
“And what kind would that be?”
“English herbal, it really is quite nice.”
“I’ve never heard of it.”
“I don’t imagine you would, it’s quite obscure.” He moved towards the
replicator.
“I used to know the obscure like the back of my hand. I’ve had a very
reckless life so far, spoiling my want for curiosity. I think I’m going
to take a break from all that.”
“Good, that way you can tell me more about your obscure life. You said
earlier it was gruesome, why?” He brought the pie over, then the drinks
“I’ve seen a lot of death, more than anyone should. I’ve also had many
friends leave me.”
“You don’t have to worry about me, I’ll never leave you.”
“That’s so sweet of you. But you’ll eventually have to leave me, or
I
may have to leave you.”
He sat down beside her “Then marry me.”
Her sweet smile continued, not believing him “That would be interesting
wouldn’t it? Marriage, I never really thought of it before. Maybe
someday, but not today.”
“Then how about tomorrow?” She stood up, her smile faded
“Please don’t joke about that. If Worf ever even thought…”
“Then there wouldn’t be much left of me. Worf is very protective of
you,
because her thinks you are special, I would do anything to protect
someone equally as special.”
“I’m not that special, believe me. It’s just when I was little, I used
to be on the Enterprise a lot. Worf took care of me, it taught me how
to
fight like a Klingon, he taught me a lot. He taught me how to grieve
when my friend Wesley Crusher left his senses.” He lifted head noticing
she said the name of another man
“Left his senses? What does that…”
“He basically went crazy. When he returned to the Enterprise after
being
taught by the Traveler, he was obsessed with madness. He made me…”
she
left the sentence unfinished.
“More of those gruesome details?” He said trying to be sympathetic,
she
nodded
“It was pretty gruesome. She turned to face him. “So what did you want
to do now?”
“I don’t know. You should probably get some sleep anyway. Tomorrow
is a
big day.”
“I’m not a child. 'Big day' aren’t the words used to describe an
eventful day. But nonetheless I should follow the Doctor’s orders.”
“Good-night, and thanks for the cooking lesson.” He left.
Larissa was left with her own thoughts. “He’s kind of cute.”
TRAINING (Q THE ROCKY MUSIC)
Admiral Nelson arrived bright and early at 7:00 the next morning.
Larissa and Captain Sisko were at the airlock to greet him.
“Welcome to the station Admiral. This is Larissa Janeway, she has
accepted the commission.”
“It’s nice to meet you Miss Janeway, or Lt. Commander Janeway rather.”
“It’s a pleasure Admiral.”
“Very well Admiral, you may begin the testing. If you’ll excuse me.”
The
Captain left the two alone. The Admiral started to study his new officer
“Age?”
“Twenty-two” She lied
“You’re a little young, but not too young. Species?”
“Borg 1.5%. Human 1.5%. Vulcan 1.5%. Batazed 1.5% Klingon 1.5%. Ocompan
1.5%. Genetically Enhanced Human1.0%. Galifrian 20%, Q 50%, and 20%
shape shifter sir.” He looked at her with surprise “I know it’s a long
list sir. I was born in the delta quadrant, with severe cell loss so
the
doctor replaced some lost DNA with other known species. Also I was
assimilated when I was two.”
“Alright, very good. Anything else you need to mention?”
“Yes sir. In the past I have accumulated quite a reputation. I’m a
Dame
of the British Empire, Ambassador to Galifrey, Jedi Knight, and if
you
ever travel back in time to ancient Greece, just tell them that
Aphrodite sent you.
“That’s quite a reputation, all completed in twenty-two years?”
“Not quite sir, but that would take considerable time to explain.”
“Very well, on ward to the testing.”
The two walked into the holosuite in Quarks; which had been just
recently cleaned and inspected. The Admiral asked for three Jem’Hadar,
five Klingons, and two Borg. Larissa was supposed to ‘deal’ with these
people.
First the Jem’Hadar. She easily flipped the first two, then a series
of
punch rejections on Larissa’s part, followed by one massive, ‘knock
your
opponent to the wall on the other side of the room’ punch.
Next a Klingon battle, with bailiffs. She proved to be a champion at
this as well, beating three of them with one swift circle movement.
Then
she kicked the crap out of the rest (literally).
A weapons test with the Borg followed. They adapted quickly, but not
quick enough. She managed to remodify the phaser burst to bounce one
off
the other, killing both. The test was over; there wasn’t a hair out
of
place on Larissa’s head.
THE REINFORCEMENTS ARE HERE, JUST DON’T TELL THE DOMINION
“Alright” an amazed Admiral Nelson managed to speak out. “Let’s move
on
to the intellectual half.”
The day went on and on; test after test; Larissa getting 100% on all
them, as well as breaking all previous time records. The end came by,
20:00, the Admiral was giving his decision to the Captain as well as
Larissa
“It is my decision that Larissa Janeway is now a Starfleet officer
with
the rank of Lt. Commander. Congratulations, you will make a fine
addition to the staff here. You may go Lt. Commander. Captain I’d like
to have a word with you.” Larissa left the Captain stayed. “Benjamin,
you have one active new officer. She goes beyond the standards of a
officer.”
“Yes sir, I know that. To what field should I assign her to?”
“I don’t know, with all the knowledge she possesses we could shut down
that field. She’s…she’s…I don’t know how to describe her. She’s very
special, she could easily bring the war to an end.”
“With all do respect sir, special as she may be, I don’t think that
she
alone could end this war.”
“Captain she is that special. She’s a Q, 50% to be exact.”
Sisko was taken aback “Are you sure?”
“Yes, she showed me, she’s also a shape shifter, many other Alpha
Quadrant species, as well as some undiscovered species. I think
‘special’ is an understatement. I want you to keep this confidential,
understand? If the Dominion gets word of this they’ll either try to
kill
her, or kidnap her. She’s going to save our corner of the galaxy Ben,
and she’s your officer.”
“That puts a lot on my shoulders. Should I take her on the Defiant’s
next mission?”
“Yes, I want to see what see does, how she reacts to war. I also want
her entire childhood written out and put in a classified file, make
sure
she knows that her past should stay there. And also under no
circumstances other than life or death situations is she to give out
any
of her DNA. Understood?”
“Yes sir. Sir there is just one more thing. It’s about Doctor Bashir,
he
and Larissa…”
“Yes Ben, go on”
“He and Larissa are becoming closer and closer, will there be a problem
with that?”
“Perhaps. Just be sure that they don’t have ‘relations’ yet, I don’t
know what her blood will do to him. Take care of her. I’m heading back
to Starbase 45, thank you for the visit.” The Admiral left that night.
PROPHECY GIRL
The Captain stood in his office for a long time that night. His new
officer was a Q, how did that happen? Why did she want to stay? Why
on
his station? Why now? He drifted off into dream, still in his office,
still in his uniform. He was dreaming of a happier time, the time before
the Borg, a time before the battle of Wolf 359. He was dreaming of
his
wife Jennifer. He was having a picnic with her, with Jake, it was a
beautiful sunny day on Earth, with only one cloud in the sky.
Then the cloud grew and grew, a thunderstorm was brewing. It overtook
the happy family, they were ripped apart, violently ripped. The storm
subsided, but only he and Jake were left. It never became as sunny
as it
had been, clouds piled up on top of them, they’re world became darker
with each passing second. Soon another storm was upon them, a twister
overtook the both of them, it took they’re picnic basket, they’re
clothes, they’re home. Suddenly Larissa appeared below them, she
outreached her hand, grabbing the both of them ad pulled them to the
ground. Then she made a weird sort of singing noise, it flowed from
her
mouth, visible as a powerful gust of wind. She calmed the sky,
everything was better, and over the hill along with a radiant sun his
wife appeared again, smiling.
He woke up, not a dream but a prophecy from the prophets. Larissa would
save them, but what kind of storm would come first?”
PASSION/FIRST DAY ON THE JOB
Larissa Janeway now a full ‘blue uniform wearing’ officer, and wasn’t
surprised with where her first post was to be. In the infirmary. She
was
now Co-Chief Medical Officer, not as a second, but on equal ground
with
Julian. What a surprise he was in for. She walked in trying to
be as
sure of herself as possible. Julian was talking with Jadzia; she didn’t
want to disturb them so she patiently waited beside the door. Of course
she couldn’t help but over hear.
“But Julian, isn’t there any possible way?”
“I’m sorry but according to the preliminary testing, no. I’ll run a
few
more just to be sure. Don’t worry Dax, I’ll find a way.”
“Thank you so much Julian. Oh, by the way. How was you’re date with
Larissa the other night?”
“I wouldn’t call it a date.”
“But you want to. Julian you can’t fool me.”
“I never could fool you. Yes I do have feelings for her, strong
feelings” She was stunned at this
“So are you going to tell her?”
“She’s been her for ten days at the most, I can’t just tell her I’m
already in love with her. I need more time, I owe her more time.”
“Maybe. So what is so appeeling about her?”
“What’s so appealing?…Everything! She’s everything I ever wanted. She’s
intelligent, beautiful, fun, exciting, mysterious. She has great sense
of humor, a wonderful personality and disposition. We have the same
interests, and to top it all off, and when she can cooks without a
replicator it tastes like food!”
“You better be careful not to become to deluded in your fantasy.
According to her training she has great hand to hand combat skills.”
“Not to mention a very big Klingon who can scare the life out of me.”
“You take care of Larissa, I’ll take care of Worf. I better get to
Ops,
I’m on duty.”
“I’ll let you know about the testing.”
As Jadzia passed the exit, she was shocked to see Larissa; she politely
said good morning and hurried out of what was sure to be an awkward
situation. At the sound of Jadzia’s ‘Good Morning Larissa’ Julian’s
ears
perked up. Larissa walked out of her hiding spot, to face a very
embarrassed Dr. Bashir, she leaned against the wall, cool and in
control.
“How long have you been standing there Larissa?”
“Long enough. Although I’m not everything you think I am; you did forget
to mention my reckless behavior.”
“ Why reckless?” he was almost speechless with embarrassment
“For doing this” she walked up to him, totally confident, shoving him
up
against the wall. He looked at her with surprise; she looked back at
him, a devilish look in her eyes. She kissed him, giving him all the
passion she could. He pulled out of the kiss, still contemplating what
had happened. The girl of his dreams had just kissed him. She still
had
a look of self-assurance in her eyes; she walked away from him. Not
being able to resist any longer, he pushed her into the wall on the
other side of the room. He began to kiss her feverishly, as if something
was compelling him to. Passion, overwhelming passion, overtaking both
of
them.
“What…(kiss) …about the …(kiss) others?” They pulled out, staring at
each other
“Well, I uh… Oh, screw the others!” He attempted to push her up against
the wall, she quickly spun away from him, he missing her, but getting
the wall. He got the point.
“I see. Very reckless”
“I’m about to do something even more reckless.” She tapped her neck,
then fell to the floor like a doll. He picked her up, and carried her
over to a bio-bed. He immediately got out a tricorder to see what she
did to herself. The readings came back. She had tampered with her
short-term memory; she had ‘erased’ the entire embarrassing episode.
He
was amazed at the fact; she had done it to save them the embarrassment.
To save him the embarrassment. She woke a few minutes later, pretending
she had all the symptoms of temporary memory loss, due to anxiety,
but
she still had the memories of the entire event, locked away deep into
her Vulcan mind, as uneraseable as, well, as one’s best kissing
experience.
“My head. What happened?”
“Well you walked into the infirmary and accidentally got yourself with
a
hypospray.”
“I don’t have accidents with clumsiness. What really happened?”
“As you would say ‘later.’ So what are you doing here anyway?”
“I am assigned here as your new co-worker. Excellent way to start my
first day, knocking myself out with a klutz attack, then forget the
first twenty minutes. Absolutely brilliant.”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, I did some stupid things when I started
out.” They changed the topic of the conversation “I was needing another
Doctor here anyway. I suppose I should give you a briefing”
“That would help.”
“Well we check the appointment list, see who’s coming in and for what
reason…”
“I got the usual Doctor’s office set up. What kinds of surgery are
we
equipped for here?”
“All kinds, including the new Janeway Cell Restructuring surgery.”
“It should be called the Bashir Cell Restructuring surgery. You’re
the
one who thought of it. So what else do we do?”
“We try to think up solutions to science’s problems.
“So we are scientists as well. What kind of problem are we solving
today? To be more specific, what’s Jadzia’s problem?”
“You had to hit the nail right on the head. She and Worf want to have
a
baby…”
“…But because their genetic makeup is so different, they are not very
compatible, and hence the problem of the day.”
“More like the problem of my life. I want to help, but I know it isn’t
possible. They are just too different.”
“You know a lot of people said that about Beatrice and Benedict…”
“From Shakespeare’s Much ado About Nothing.”
“I didn’t know you were a Shakespeare buff. Anyway they were totally
different, and look how well they turned out.”
“But we can’t just arrange the cells to become one.”
“You’re right, they may need some persuasion.”
“It’s an interesting hypotheses, but unfortunately it is in scientific
dreamland, while we are in scientific reality.”
“Who knows, it could become a reality if I had the necessary time and
equipment.” They were interrupted
“Sisko to Janeway. Report to the bridge of the Defiant immediately.”
“Sounds like a battle, best go fight it to the bitter end Lt.
Commander.”
“I’ll see you later Doctor.”
THE MISSION (LAST EPISODE OF THE 1997-1998 DEEP SPACE NINE SEASON)
(If you’ll remember, during that episode, The Defiant is sent along
with
a fleet of determined Starfleet ships to take a system that the Dominion
has left unguarded by ships but guarded with those mine platforms.
Jadzia has just been killed by Gul Ducat, while he destroyed a Bajoran
Orb.)
The Captain reacted to the wormhole disappearing. Although this time
Larissa felt this, as well as having a premonition about what had
happened in the Bajoran Temple.
“Larissa, Captain? What happened?”
The Captain woke up, groggy “The…the Prophets. Something happened.”
Larissa also knew what had happened. A tear fulled her eye. “Something
else happened as well, someone on the station…”
The crew’s ears perked up. Worf moved over to her, suspecting the truth.
She stared at him, then nodded, giving away the answer. He shuttered,
suddenly felt faint.
“Captain, I’m getting a message from DS9, it’s from Julian. Oh, God…”
Major Kira stuttered, not believing what she read.
“What is it Major? Is it as bad as I think it is?”
“Yes…yes sir. Jadzia is suffering major internal bleeding. She won’t
last much longer.”
The captain stared out the view-screen, as if saying a short prayer.
“Ensign lay in a course back to the station. Maximum warp.” He left
the
bridge. The deck was silent, as silent as an empty room. Worf looked
at
a devastated Larissa Janeway. She looked at him, then nodded.
“I’ll be in the infirmary, trying to think of something.”
The ship docked, the senior staff ran to the infirmary, Larissa carried
with her a container, with an oversized cell.
Julian came out in his red surgical robe. “I managed to save the Dax
symbiont, there was nothing I could do for Jadzia. I’ll take the
symbiont out after she…” He let Worf and Ben pass him, to talk to Dax.
He felt as if he had failed, Dax had been such a wonderful friend to
him, and now he couldn’t save her. He went into his office, sat down,
knowing that at those very moments Jadzia was taking her last breaths.
Larissa came in.
“Come along Doctor, we’ve got work to do.”
“I don’t think so, not now. Now I just want to be here.”
“Suit yourself,” she showed him the container. He was too tired to
notice
She walked into the room where Jadzia lay “Worf, It’s ready.” She pored
the precious cells into a hypospray. She walked over to Jadzia, who
was
just barely conscious. “This may tingle just a bit.” She released the
cells into Dax’s body. She fell unconscious for a minute, the hole
in
her stomach fulled up, the stain of her blood faded. Jadzia opened
her
eyes, alive. Worf reacted joyfully, he kissed her. Sisko was also very
happy, hugging his friend.
UNSTOPPABLE
Larissa was very happy as well, but on the inside, instead of out. She
knew how much it would have meant to Julian if he had have been there.
She solemnly walked into the office again. He was so deep in thought,
he
didn’t notice. She walked up behind him, and started rubbing his
shoulders, massaging his upper body. He moved his hand over hers,
acknowledging what she was doing. Suddenly his ears perked up, he heard
Jadzia laughing in the other room. He ran to her, leaving Larissa alone.
He saw her amazed she was alive. She got up from her biobed, and hugged
him, Worf didn’t intervene.
“Thank you Julian.”
“You’re…you’re alive. How?”
She let go motioning for him to ask Larissa, then left the infirmary
with Worf and Captain Sisko. Larissa was sitting beside a console typing
something in, taking no notice of Doctor Bashir.
“Larissa, how did you…I’m not even going to ask.”
“It would be better if you didn’t anyway. I don’t think I could
duplicate the procedure. Not without doing excessive damage to myself.”
She continued typing. He moved and turned the console off. He took
her
hands up, holding them. She stood up, her body being very close to
his.
They were unable to resist, they kissed, not with the passion they
had
before, just gently touching each other’s lips. They pulled out, eyes
still locked into each other’s. She kissed him, gently, sweetly, moving
her hands around his neck. He realized he was in love with her.
They were still one, joined at the mouth when Sisko walked in, wanting
to have a word with them They didn’t notice him, they were to involved
with each other. Upon seeing this, Sisko walked out, quickly but
quietly. He remembered what the Admiral had said about not letting
them
get to close, but he didn’t give a damn.
Julian held her, arms around her waist, contemplating what should happen
next. Larissa was thrown into a state of confusion. She knew she
couldn’t get involved with a man,. but she still wanted to. She felt
something strong for him, something she couldn’t see, but couldn’t
break.
“So how did you do it? And for that matter, why couldn’t you do it
to
yourself again?”
“Come along, its time to pull out the photo album.” She went towards
a
console, typed in something, and an image of herself came up on the
computer screen. “Computer, magnify on section 5,” she turned to Julian
“My second heart” The screen closed in on her heart, opened to give
an
inside view. “Computer magnify on nucleus of heart” The center of the
heart came up. Julian saw something unusual.
“There’s something blocking the arteries, it’s stopping the flow of
blood.”
“You would normally think so wouldn’t you. Computer magnify clogged
arteries.” Nine giant sized cells came up on the screen. “Those large
red things are actually the a completely new type of cell called
Regenerative Cells. They are only found in Timelords, the people of
Galifrey. The artery cloggers are the left over remnance of the last
cell.”
“What is the purpose of these cells, what’s the purpose of another
heart?”
“These cells, are life. If I were to have an accident and die, that
would mean that the past cell can’t help, or it has run out of energy.
So the next cell would take its place. This can happen a total of
thirteen times, I have experienced it three times before, and I gave
one
away to Jadzia today.”
“If you’ve regenerated so much, you can’t be only twenty-two.”
“I did lie about my age, but not in the way you’re thinking.”
“And what’s that supposed to mean?” She looked at him, with the ‘later’
look. “Alright, I get the point. It’s obvious that you can’t keep giving
this cell regeneration away, so why not duplicate it?”
“Can’t, not without permission from the High Council on Galifrey.
Mortals don’t do well with the prospect of immortality. Besides, no
one
knows it but sometimes immortality can be a curse.”
Julian looked at her, he himself being immortal. So she thinks she
understands about the curse of immortality, she has no idea.
Larissa moved over to the console, erasing the image of her heart.
“I
understand that you have a conference to go to tomorrow morning.”
Julian came out of deep thought “Excuse me? I was thinking”
“That’s okay. I was asking about the conference on Galena 8 tomorrow.
You are still going aren’t you?”
“Yes, I was going to leave at 4:00 tomorrow morning. It’s only for
two
days, I shouldn’t worry.”
“Who’s worrying, I’m not. If you have to leave that early you should
probably get some sleep. I know I am.” She started to move towards
the
door, Julian turned around to face her
“Thinking of getting up early as well?”
“No, it’s just loss of regeneration cells, makes me a little tired.
I
have to check the casualty reports before I go down so…Oh by the way,
did you want me to say good-bye to you tomorrow morning?”
“No, it’s okay. You sleep in. See you in a few days.”
Larissa checked the reports, over 9,000 more officers dead, 13 ships
had
been lost. Clearly something needed to be done about the way the war
was
going. Someone had to help, someone had to do something. She decided
that she had to do something, something big, something secret.
Regeneration, past regeneration, 2002 regeneration; she thought back
to
her life as Larissa Wright, her first regeneration. She was at that
time
an actress, and she acted alongside Ralph Fiennes as a secret agent,
a
secret agent with style. That was one hell of a first day!
THERE’S A MAN WHO LEADS A LIFE OF DANGER…/THE BEGINNING OF THE AVENGERS
(CONTINUED FROM EPISODE “MEN IN BLACK”)
“We have come to the conclusion Doctor Bashir, that you are not only
loyal to the Federation, but you go beyond our standards.”
“So what are you saying? Do you want to recruit me or something?”
“Yes, that is our objective.”
“Why me?”
“Well Doctor, no matter how many times you deny it, we know you are
a
Q.” He was stunned, after all the careful planning, all the covering
up,
someone still knew. “Doctor, we look for the very best the galaxy has
to
offer, you are one of these people.”
“Do I have a choice?”
“No, not really. We have memory banks not even you could erase or tamper
with, so if you deny us, we’ll expose you.”
“What will I be doing?”
“You pick a code name, and you’ll be assigned to a case. We already
have
a case opened for you, here” He handed Julian a pad
“Weather problems on a distant planet? That isn’t of much relevance,
why
are we investigating it?”
“The last planet to report this type of weather malfunction blew up
without warning. If this happened in Federation space, there would
be
mass panic. As for a partner, Computer activate last holo-test, search
for image of Larissa Janeway. Display.”
An image of Larissa came up, she was holding a phaser; and looking
very
much like an old television heroine, with a phaser instead of
a gun.
“What about her, she would make a fine agent. An excellent partner.”
“No, I couldn’t… I won’t put her through this. I’ll find another
partner.”
“I can understand why you deny her. She’s you’re crewmate, your fellow
Doctor on DS9, she’s also the one you’re in love with.” Julian nodded.
“Best not to get emotions involved in this. Have you thought of anything
for a code name?”
Julian walked around the image of Larissa again. She looked so much
like… “Yes, I’ll take the name John Steed, of the Avengers.”
“Not a bad idea. It’s a shame though, she looks so much like Mrs. Peel
the way she holds that weapon. Come on, I’ll give you all the
information you will require.”
The two walked out of the Holodeck, Julian headed toward another life
as
a secret agent.
SECRETS
Julian returned to the station at 23:00 that night. He silently walked
down the corridor into his quarters. He entered and sat down, thinking
of who could be his partner. Then he realized he was not alone in the
room, he turned around. Larissa was standing beside the door, an angry
look on her face
“Julian, I know you weren’t at the medical conference. Where were you?”
“You really want to know?” She nodded “Larissa, I care for you very
much, but…but this time you have to accept a ‘later’ from me. I don’t
want to lie to you, and I can’t tell you. Can you accept that?”
She was silent, her body language was as well. “Julian, you can tell
me
anything…but I have to respect you. Yes, I can accept that, just next
time tell me when you’re going to disappear. I was very worried about
you.” He held her close, saying he was sorry.
“You were really worried about me? I’m sorry I…”
“Let’s just not talk about it.”
“Larissa, I might have to disappear a few times a month. I won’t be
able
to give any warning or explanation.”
“Take me with you”
“I…I can’t.”
“I can understand, we all have secrets. You can’t tell me yours any
more
than I can tell you. I’ll see you tomorrow…” She left the room. He
stood
there for a minute contemplating what she said; she had secrets?
APART
The next day Larissa was off work, but Doctor Bashir still had to go.
They didn’t see each other all day, although they spoke to each other
through the commline. Larissa had built a ship, or zapped it up rather.
It had Borg weapons, 29th century shields, and advanced computer, as
well as a cloaking device. She had also already picked out the perfect
mission to test it out with. A Dominion fleet was going to attack an
unprotected part of Federation space that night. She knew this because
she had done a sensor sweep of all areas of Federation space, and this
seemed like a logical attack area, the Dominion were sure to jump on
it
tonight, before Starfleet could send reinforcements.
After this she used the defector dish on board her new ship to
communicate with her home in the Delta Quadrant, a ship which was lost,
far away from home. A familiar face came on the screen
“Larissa, it’s so good to see you. My you’re a Starfleet officer now”
“Yes Mother, I’m a Lt. Commander.”
A male spoke “You can’t out rank your own father, you should be demoted
down to Ensign.”
“I’m sure if you tried hard enough, mother would promote you Daddy”
A Vulcan spoke “How is the war Larissa? Does it near an end?”
“No, Uncle Tuvok, I’m afraid it gets worse everyday. I’m going to have
to intervene tonight”
“Are you well prepared?” her friend asked
“Don’t worry Seven, if they mess with me, they get the old “Resistance
is Futile”. How’s Naomi?”
“She’s fine, she asks about you a lot, but I tell her you’ll come home
for Christmas.”
“In six months who knows, she may be home for Christmas. Then again
it
could be six years, if I don’t figure out what it is I have to do.”
“How are things where you’re posted, where are you posted?”
“A station, Deep Space Nine. It was discovered two weeks after you
disappeared. And things are great, I’ve made a few great friends. Worf
is here to so I’m fine.”
“That’s great. Are the boys all over you yet?”
“Daddy, really. Just one, and I really like him, and I think he likes
me
too.”
“Let’s just hope he doesn’t turn out like that Crusher boy.”
“Don’t worry B’lanna, I know what to do if that happens.”
“Have you kissed him yet?”
A person on the other ship reacted by swatting him across the head.
“Tom, really. You’re daughter’s life is her own. You shouldn’t pry.
“But she’s my daughter, I’m entitled to know these things. I can’t
even
give the guy the third degree when he picks her up for a date. I always
wanted to do that.”
“Don’t worry Daddy. Worf does it enough anyway. Poor Julian trembles
when he comes down the corridor.”
“Julian…Julian Bashir?” Chakotey said “I think I went to the Academy
with him. He’s a very nice fellow. I don’t think you have anything
to
worry about Katherine.”
“Those are the types I usually worry about.”
“Don’t worry. I can take care of myself. I better go, someone could
intercept this message. Say hello to everyone for me. Bye” The screen
went blank, Larissa was left alone in her room. Time to go, she got
into
the outfit she had chosen for the mission, then entered her new ship.
Julian had too called it a day, and left, searching for a partner in
the
ship that Section 31 had provided for him. He set the sensors to track
for any advanced ships, he found one. It was heading towards a remote
section of Federation space, a place a Dominion attack fleet was
heading. This person is truly daring!
PART TWO
A INTERESTING INTRODUCTION (This part was written before Part One)
A Dominion fleet of 11,000 ships begins to move into an unprotected
section of Federation territory. Everything is going according to their
battle plans. The nearest Starfleet ship has been alerted, except it
is
ten light years away. The Dominion has won this battle. Or have they?
Suddenly their ships are being fired on! The Vorta has ordered the
rest
of the fleet to destroy whatever is destroying them. 5,000 ships have
already been ripped apart.
“Find that ship!” the Vorta is screaming at his officers
The cloaked ship they were searching for contained none other than
Lt.
Commander Larissa Janeway, and she had no intention of being caught.
5,000 more ships were destroyed, mainly due to advanced Borg weapon
system. She took a direct hit, the cloak on the ship malfunctioned!
The
Dominion was firing on her, and her shields had been penetrated. She
could almost hear the Jem’Hadar chanting their favorite phrase
“Victory is life!”
Suddenly another ship uncloaked, and started firing on the Dominion.
It
drew their fire long enough for her to get her shields back online,
and
start firing again. Soon the remaining Dominion vessels started
retreating. The unknown vessel started hailing her. Strangely she
answered (violating one of the rules she wanted to follow) putting
on a
mask first; so that whoever it was wouldn’t know who she was. A man
in a
mask came on the view screen.
“Excellent shooting. And you are?”
“My name is of no concern to you,” she said coldly, regretting engaging
the transmission
“Well, it concerns me to know who helped me destroy this fleet.”
“I’m with Starfleet, and that’s all you need to know”
“I would prefer to know”
The man in the opposite shuttle was obviously not going to take no
for
an answer. It was very strange how the shuttle was almost the same
type
as hers; advanced cloaking devise advanced weaponry, the shape and
geometrics of the ship. The masked man in the other ship grew tired
of
waiting
“Since you are so stubborn as to not tell me your name, would you like
me to choose a name for you”
As if offended she replied coolly “That will not be necessary, you
may
call me Emma”
“That’s not your real name is it?” he said detecting a lie in her voice
“What makes you say that?”
Disregarding the question he went on in a tone, as if they were good
friends instead of unwilling allies staring at each other across a
battlefield.
“Emma? Emma…? Where have I heard that name before? Zepherm Chocran’s
wife Emma, Emma the Duchess of Kent, Emma…
“None of the above, but if you must know it’s actually after Emma
Bunton”
“Who and why”
“Why -haven’t you ever heard of her three ‘S’s
“And those would be?”
“Sweet, secretive, seductive siren
“That’s four”
“That’s three, and a noun.”
“ And do you think of yourself as any of those?
“What I think is irrelevant.” She was growing impatient “ If you have
nothing of relevance to say, I will be on my way”
“I don’t think so.” Then he put her ship in a tractor beam
“Explain yourself” she said angrily
“I thought we could talk”:
“I was under the impression we were talking”
“But speaking through a communicator is so impersonal Emma.”
“Come to think of it I don’t want you calling me by my first name.
You
may call me Miss Peel.”
“And why not Miss Bunton?”
“If you’ll remember Miss Peel wasn’t always what she seemed”
A flash, and they both were out of they’re shuttles, and in Hyde Park
in
London, England, late 20th century
“Neither was John Steed.” Both were in Avenger type outfits, Miss Peel
in a catsuit, Steed in a three-piece carrying an umbrella as well as
wearing a bowler and mask. Miss Peel was also wearing a mask. She was
sitting on a bench, while Steed circled her.
“Clothing, as identifiable as DNA, it defines your character. What
do
you think Miss Peel?” he said swinging his umbrella behind her
“I think you’re a Q,” she said cool and confident as ever
“I think you are as well, am I correct?”
“Not entirely, I’m 50% Q 50% other.”
“But 100% womanly perfection,” he said leaning over her, placing his
hands on her shoulders
“You’re going to carry your little Avenger fantasy out aren’t you,”
she
said pulling out of the akward situation “Don’t you have anything better
to do?”
“No. You said you work for Starfleet, I give you my word as a gentleman
that this is the truth, I work for them as well”
“Worthless. I’ve known too many gentlemen. Do you have a point to make,
or do you just wish to bother me?”
Crack! A stick broke behind her. Five intimidating looking men stepped
out of the bushes
“Please Miss Peel, don’t make this difficult” Steed said. She glared
at
him as if to say ‘Fat Chance’
The man behind her made the first move, he stepped up to her and put
his
large hand on her shoulder as if to say, “let’s go” she took a first
step, taking him off his guard. Then WHAM! She elbowed him in the
stomach, then flipped him over her shoulder and into the three men
in
front of her. She jumped over the one standing up, right into a
lamppost. Then began to swing around and around knocking out the men
with her powerful legs. Steed stood there in total awe of the warrior.
“Come along Steed, join the fun?” she said in between judo chops
Finally all the men lay before her dead or unconscious. Steed just
stared. She wasn’t even out of breath
“Impressive.” As if to say thanks for the workout she flipped
over the
stone wall and jumped into the city streets.
“Bashir to Section 31, put me through to High Command”
‘High Command here, go ahead Doctor”
‘Made contact with possible recruit, up to athletic standards,
proceeding to Test 2.”
Then he jumped over the wall and onto her trail.
AUTOMOBILES
Soon after the masked Miss Peel escaped from Steed, she found her
shuttle and transformed it into a car, a 1967 blue Convertible/Roadster,
like one she’d had in the past.
“I’m going to get even with that bastard. Who does he think he is?”
On her car phone she opened a Commline to Starfleet Command, four
hundred years into the future
“Lt. Commander Larissa Janeway here, put me through to Admiral Neilson.”
“Neilson here, go ahead Lt. Commander.”
“Admiral, I’ve been abducted, by unknown forces. Requesting a period
of
two weeks departure.”
“Why so long?”
“ If these people can abduct me, they can abduct, and control anything.
I intend to infiltrate and destroy this threat.”
“You return to DS9 tonight, I’ll come up with an excuse for you to
leave. Starfleet out”
With that she pulled out of the parking space and went for an evening
joyride, getting a feel of the geometrics of the city. She was
deep in
the countryside when she realized she was being followed. By Steed’s
car! She speed up.
Steed must have found a way to tap into her commline, because his voice
was heard in her car. “Very good Miss Peel, but I can match your speed”
“Not for long Steed”
Her car sped up to a warp factor, and disappeared. He slowed to a stop.
“Oh, this girl was going to get it. Definitely”
THE MORNING AFTER
They both went home from there. Each not knowing the other’s identity,
or point of origin.
Little did they know they lived on the same station, knew each other,
and worked together as Chief and Assistant Medical Officers. Miss Peel
or Lt. Commander Larissa Janeway was skilled in everything from command
to piloting, but was working as a Doctor. She was very nice to everyone
and never bragged about her skills. Steed or Doctor Julian Bashir was
very deeply in love with her, and in every respect. He loved her
brilliant mind, her unchallanged beauty, her personality, and her
principals. The only thing that stood in his way was a 7foot Klingon
that was overly protective of Larissa. As he was explaining to Mother
all night about how she got away, he was very tired. Miss Peel however,
required only 12 hours of sleep over a period of one week. The morning
opens as she is adjusting her Borg Nanoprobes in the infirmary as a
tired Doctor walks in
“Morning Julian”
“(yawn) What?”
“I said ‘Morning Julian’, are you feeling alright?”
“Didn’t get much sleep last night (yawn) nightmares”
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear about that. If you want I could go to the
Replimat and get you a ractigino.”
“No (yawn) that’s alright. So (yawn) what have we got today?”
“ NeroSurgery at 15:00, and of course the Jadzia and Worf problem.
I’ve
thinking, and I think I’ve found a cell mutation experiment that could
simulate my Regenerative cells. If we modified them properly, it could
help get Jadzia pregnant. Well, come along”
“What” he said startled, knowing he’d heard those words in the same
voice and tone as last night
“We’ve a senior staff meeting remember?
“Amazing how you remember everything. (yawn) Intriguing really”
“Julian you can’t go, you’re too tired, you’d fall asleep during Worf’s
report.”
“Wouldn’t that be terrible (yawn) he’d come after me. ”
“He’ll come after you anyway. I’m serious take the day off, I’ll handle
everything. What good is a doctor when he’s falling asleep?” She kissed
him on the check, and left for the meeting in Ops.
The hours passed Larissa in a four-hour meeting wondering how Bashir
was, while Julian was in a deep, deep, sleep.
I KNOW SOMETHING YOU DON’T KNOW
<four hours later>
“Julian? Are you up yet?” Larissa came into his quarters carrying a
bag
of chicken soup, a ham and roast beef sandwich a fresh fruit salad,
and
a mug of English herbal tea. She put the bag down on the table and
went
into the bedroom. Seeing that he was asleep in his uniform she knelt
down beside his bed. She looked at his face, asleep, she gently stoked
his forehead.
“Julian I left lunch on your table” she whispered, moving toward the
window
He woke up “So,” a half-asleep voice started “How was the meeting?”
“As boring as ever. Casualty report, section report, battle plans,
the
usual. There was one interesting bit of war news. An armada of 11,000
Dominion ships were ripped apart by a Starfleet attack,”
“We finally won something,” he said as he got up and stood beside her
“That does seem strange”
“It gets stranger, not one Starfleet ship was lost”
“That is strange, but let me guess, gets better.”
“The better part, is that not one of our ships was deployed there,
the
nearest fleet was 10 light years away.”
He frowned, and showed a look of disbelief, she returned the look,
both
knowing what really happened. They shrugged it off. “So what’s for
lunch?”
“I doubt you’ll have a lot of time to eat it, your ship leaves in two
hours.”
“Ship?”
“You’ve been called away to a medical conference on Risa. And to answer
you’re next question, two weeks. I’m going away too, I have some
negotiating to do on Romulas, same amount of time, and I leave in a
half
an hour.”
“I’ll meet you at the airlock in twenty minutes”
She smiled at him and left
Bashir thought to himself “It’s really too bad she couldn’t be my
partner.”
They met at the airlock like they said they would, and said their
good-byes.
“Well, I’ll see you in two weeks Larissa, oh, I want you to look over
this holodeck program. I’ll get Quark to reserve the holosuite for
us.”
“I’ll miss you. Bye” they moved in to kiss each other, but Worf walked
into the corridor. They uncomfortably hugged instead.
As soon as she boarded the shuttle she took a look at the program:
The
Avengers.
‘Julian’ she thought,’ I don’t need to read this, it’s going to be
my
life for the next few weeks’
Julian walked away from the airlock and thought to himself, ‘Larissa
darling, you better read it well, because I’m playing to win.’
He got
to his room and opened a Commline to Earth
“Julian Bashir to Section 31, put me through to High Command”
“High Command here, here are your orders Doctor, on the next instant
you
find Miss Peel, I want you to personally take care of her. And while
you’re at it use any means to find her weaknesses, and anything else
that would leave her vulnerable.”
“Understood, Steed out”
“So do it my way” he thought to himself “The hunt has begun”
IT’S A GOOD VINTAGE,
Sure enough by 21:00 hours Miss Peel was looking for Steed to reap her
revenge; but Steed had a more effective way of catching her than looking
for her. Wanting to know of how sharp and fast she was, he had exploded
a Cosmic Strain, knowing she couldn’t resist shutting it down,
especially when he added in a transport ship, with 5,977 life signs
on
board, heading straight into the center.
She of course fell for it, shutting it down in little under three
minutes; breaking Steed’s record of five.
She was about to pull away when the station hailed her “Thank you for
your help unknown vessel, but you’re not leaving yet”
Another tractor beam! Outraged she beamed over armed only with a small
phaser, as well as a dagger. She beamed directly onto the main corridor
of the ship, proving how fearless she was, hoping to intimidate her
enemies. When she beamed over there was no one there, not one of the
life signs her ship had picked up. Maybe just one.
“Welcome Miss Peel! Would you care to join me for a bottle of Champagne
in the Mess Hall? It’s a very good vintage” She recognized the voice
immediately
“I don’t take alcohol from strangers over an intercom.”
Nevertheless once again trying to prove her fearlessness, she walked
into the Mess Hall. It was quiet, too quiet. Sub-consciously she could
hear the sound of something moving, moving toward her.
Smack! She grabbed something, a hand. Elbow in the stomach; flip over
her back Thud! But the injured was alive and kicking. (Literally).
He
swung his legs into a spin attempting to trip her. A flip into the
air
and landed, her back facing her opponent. She spun around to face him.
Gone! Then someone grabbed her from behind, holding her hands together
with one hand, a concealed weapon in the other.
“Very impressive Miss Peel, here have some champagne.” Crash! Right
over
her head, knocking her out, and knocking her into his waiting arms.
He
bent over her, studying her, her outfit allowed a partial view of her
chest.
“Steed to High Command”
“Mother here Steed and you better start calling this place the Ministry
or the whole plan’s ruined. Report.”
“Miss Peel has been knocked unconscious, although I may need to have
my
back looked at.”
“Excellent, proceed to Test 3. Sorry about you're back. Over and out.”
TEST THREE
Miss Peel awoke in a shuttlecraft, which looked very much like her own
“Good morning Miss Peel, I hope you slept well.”
“Thanks to you, and a fine assortment of drugs I’m sure”
“ Right on top of things. Oh, that’s a level 56 forcefield your behind,
so I’d stay away from it. One touch and you’re dead.”
“Maybe for an unprepared mortal”
“But you’re 1/2 mortal, that’s enough to kill you.”
“I take it, it would be rather pointless popping out of here.”
“Quite pointless, I would prusue you through time, as well as space.”
“You sound as though you were chasing a Chimerion. I take it I’m of
some
value to you”
“You make it sound as though I was a bounty hunter. All will be
explained later Miss Peel, have no worries. You will stay with me,
until
you are no longer needed. It would be quite pointless to try to escape.”
‘Not, if you’re well prepared.” She slowly moved her hand down her waist
and into a hidden pocket, a nail file, with an acrylic/copper wire
inside. She stroked her hand behind her ear, looking for an implant,
a
Borg implant. Eureka! She removed it, took the wire to it, she started
readjusted some nodes.
“Only if the mortal is well prepared? Maybe if you had the proper
equipment.”
“The equipment that you have no intention of providing” Quickly
adjusting the devise
‘Who knows, you shut down that vortex well enough, beating my record
in
fact, you may find the necessary resources” Finished, replacing the
implant
“For all you know I could have already found it”
“What?” He spun his chair around to face her. She put her hand up to
the
forcefield; it threw her back. Steed crossed his arms in front of him,
as if to say ‘told you so’. Not letting his gesture affect her, she
tried again, this time seceding, and coming all the way through. She
than smiled an innocent yet secretive glance
“How?” Facing her in a sly disbelief.
Then taking the seat next to him, “Magic”
“If you are wondering, we’re headed straight for Earth, and to answer
your next question: yes, you are going to meet my superiors. And to
answer your next question they are called Mother and Father. And, to
answer the next question, I’ll explain the rest when we get there”
“That wasn’t my next question. My next question was do you always finish
other people’s sentences?”
“Yes, and if it bothers you…”
“…Too bad.” Steed looking at her in a blank stare “I learn quickly”
“We’re arriving in the Terran System”
“And we’re not alone, we’ve got three Starfleet on our tail. Should
I
deal with them?”
“Why not, I want to see what you’ll do to your own” Three photon
torpedoes were fired, aimed at they’re propulsion/weapon system. Direct
hits all of them, they were no longer a threat
“Our guests must have come for only a short visit”
“What did you do? Did you destroy them?”
“Crippled is more the word, and let me guess I’ve passed Test 3. Do
we
now plunge into the real world?”
“You’re very on top of things aren’t you? No, now we go meet Mother
and
Father.”
“And I’m guessing that involves me being unconscious”
“Right on top of things, good-night Miss Peel” He got her with a
hypospray, before she could resist
THE MINISTRY
She woke up in a large room; she focused in on her surroundings. She
saw
was a large black and white check pattern ceiling. And a man wearing
a
mask, John Steed
“How do you feel?”
Quickly realizing she could be at a disadvantage she checked to see
if
she was still wearing a mask. Tracing her face she found the outline
of
black leather. Then realizing Steed might want her to fell at a
disadvantage she groaned and spoke “Better than you”
“What?” She flipped him over her and onto the wall opposite her bed.
Knocked against the wall, and landed next to her on the bed.
“That was for the Champagne bottle.” She said jumping up “So what do
I
do today?”
“You have an hour to do whatever you do in the morning, then you are
joining Mother, Father, and I for breakfast.”
“Sounds rather pointless, I don’t have to eat”.
“Yes, you do, and Mother and Father do too.
“50% as well?”
“Zero actually.”
“Then why do you work for them?”
“At breakfast. See you then”
She only took ten minutes to get ready, dressing into a forest green
pants with blazer, with a white silk blouse underneath. She spent the
other fifty working on her theory she had told Julian about. She was
onto the pelimenerary a sketch when Steed walked in.
“You’re ten minutes early,” she said not looking up
“The rule is men are early, and women are late”
“You obviously play by the rules”
“ You don’t either” Catching her attention
“Rules are meant to be broken” Rising her head,
Very pretty, he thought to himself. She would surpass Larissa if not
for
the mask; then continuing the conversation “But if there are no rules,”
he said sitting next to her “ Then the prize is worthless”
“And just what is the prize?” Looking at each other, losing themselves
“You of course” emerging from the sea of her hazel eyes. “What are
you
drawing?” he said picking up the pad of paper she’d been working on.
“Looks like a sketch for a cell that could restructure organs. Amazing”
he flipped through the pages mesmerized. She had the brains of Larissa
as well.
“They’re for a friend of mine, her and her husband are having a
difficult time having a child because they’re different species”
“Sounds like a problem I have, who are you working for?”
“We’re going to be late,” she said trying to avoid having to answer
“In a hurry aren’t we?”
“You are too?” He gave a look of confusion “‘We’ is plural, ‘you’ is
single, and yes, the faster I meet them, the faster I can get this
whole
predicament over with.”
‘You wish for this to be overwith?”
“No, I just don’t like you”
They passed numerous security checks, lifts, and identification. Finally
they reached a long downward slopping hallway. It led to a large office,
with ten security guards, and a man and a woman. Strangely these people
were not wearing masks.
“Miss Peel, Mother and Brenda”
“Mother, Brenda, Miss Emma Peel.”
“That’s not her real name!” Mother shouted angrily
“That’s not yours either.” Miss Peel said coolly
Mother looked at her as if to say ‘how dare you’ but instead said,
“Oh,
fiery isn’t she!”
“A volcano” Steed said trying to match her coolness
“Now to the point. Miss Peel, what we set out to do is find the top
people. The people, who can occasionally pull off anything. You are
one
of these people. That is why we want you to join us. Will you?”
“Depends what I’m assigned to do”
“Well you’d be assigned a partner first”
“And after that?”
“You’d be assigned an assignment.”
“You wouldn’t have asked me here if you didn’t already have an
assignment and a partner ready. So what is it?”
“She certainly does like to cut to the chase.”
“Very direct:” Miss Peel looked at them, cool as usual
“Very well then, lights Brenda! This as you can plainly see is Delta
Centuri along the border of the Delta Quadrant. Four weeks ago, our
agents there reported strange weather. The planet, and shortly after
the
solar system it’s located in, was destroyed a week later. Two weeks
ago,
the Chinook system reported the same thing, and the same thing happened,
only they managed to trace the source. Earth, specifically England.
Lights Brenda!
“So, any suspects?”
“Two, Mr. Quincy Outlook, and Lord Edward Barns”
“Checked them out yet?”
“Two heads are better than one, besides we need a woman’s touch, you’ll
be working with Steed.”
“I might have known” Emma said sounding annoyed.
“Brenda, please show Miss Peel the flat we picked out for her, oh and
Miss Peel, find some means of transportation, an automobile perhaps.”
They exit
“She’s magnificent Steed, excellent choice”
“I’m not so sure, it’s been two days since I met her and I’m already
finding strange affections for her. Who is she anyway?”
‘Why don’t you ask her? I’m sure if you develop a mutual trust and
took
off your mask first, she’d…”
“Start laughing and disappear knowing who I am, where I live, who I
call
friends. I know she’s my partner and it shouldn’t go passed that, but…
I
just can’t…”
“Get her out of your head. You show too much emotion toward her. Even
I
was getting the impression you have a fancy for her. Find out what
she
knows. While we’re on the subject what does she know?”
“Wish I knew, her mind is totally unpenerterable. It’s like a stone
wall
that I can’t overcome. Oh well, best be going.”
‘Good Luck Steed!”
MISS PEEL’S FLAT
In no time at all Miss Peel pulled up to her flat in her new
Convertible/Roadster, noticing that Steed’s car was also parked there.
She walked into the house
“Miss Peel, What took you so long? I’ve been worried”
“No you haven’t.” she put the bag down on a table “I was getting a
set
of wheels, and I went shopping.”
“Oh, what did you get?” opening the bag of items “A fruit salad,
shortbread, flowers, and tea”
“You say it as if it were ordinary” Swinging around him, their eyes
caught once again, both pairs of hands on the jar of bags one atop
the
other. She became awkward, her first weakness.
“That’s a very nice ring you’re wearing” He said, taking her
hand back,
as if questioning the sudden withdraw. Turning from him
“Thank you”
“My friend has one very much like it, and she likes this kind of tea
English herbal tea.”
“Who’s your friend?” she said regaining her strength. Strangely he
found
himself betraying himself
“Julian Bashir, he’s a Doctor on DS9”
“Is he by any chance the one who works with Larissa Janeway?”
“Yes, that’s the one. How do you know her?”
“She’s an old childhood playmate.”
“Most of her childhood is classified”
.“I take it you know all the classified information?”
“Unfortunately no, Mother does.”
“Pity, it’s quite interesting.” She said, sounding haughty
“You know Miss Peel, these masks are terribly impersonal. I’ve got
an
idea. You could change your face to fit Larissa’s and I could change
mine to match Doctor Bashir’s.”
“An interesting idea, I don’t think she would mind, after all it’s
only
for the remainder of the mission”
They both nodded at each other and changed their faces. Although
secretly the thought to themselves that the other didn’t look much
different without the mask on.
“So, is this all you bought to decorate your apartment? A bouquet of
flowers?”
“I like to have one real item before I zap in the rest.” And
with that
she turned the small living space into an elegant house.
“You’re missing something.”
“And that would be?”
“A chessboard” <ZAP> “shall we play”
“Just a few moves”
“You go first”
“Rook to pawn”
“Rook to pawn”
“Now can we deal with our current problem”
“It’s quite simple, I’ll visit Mr. Quincy Outlook and…”
“I’ll go visit Lord Barns. Meet you back here at five”
“Fine.” The two got into their cars, and drove away in opposite
directions. Steed arrived at his destination first
MR QUINCY OUTLOOK
Knock, Knock, Knock “Mr. Outlook?”
“Yes! Yes! (fiss, pop, fiss) get down stranger!
BOOM!
“So sorry about that. (Cough)”
“It’s alright Mr. Outlook, it’s fine”
“Oh glad to hear it Mr.…”
“Steed, John Steed. What happened exactly?”
“Well, I accidentally mixed an intensified dormant baking soda and
vinegar mixture with an acid. But what acid?”
“Mr. Outlook, I was wondering if you had ever made any atmospheric
altering solutions?”
“What? I don’t know . I’ve done a lot. But I’ll check my records.”
Sits
down at a computer
“There we go a list of all the formulas I’ve ever made, now we key
in
the formula you want. What was it again?”
“Atmospheric altering solutions.” The man at the computer gave a
confused look “Otherwise known as weather altering solutions”
“Oh, why didn’t you say so in the first place!” he continued to type
in
“Ah yes, here it is yes, take some of this and then hook it up to a
beam
launcher and bingo!”
“Thank you Mr. Outlook. Does anyone else have any knowledge of this?”
“Well, I could have sold the technology to someone in the past, it’s
possible…”
“To whom? I need to know.”
“Well,” typed in a few more “Yes, I did sell it, and with exclusive
rights”
“To whom?”
“To a…” type, type “…to a Mr.…a yes to Lord Edward Barns. Why is
something wrong?”
“Uh, no” Steed stumbled out trying to cover the truth “Just curious.
Mr.
Outlook, is it possible for me to borrow a copy of this information?
I’d
return it to you later this afternoon.”
“I don’t see a problem with that, if you promise to return it within
a
week.”
“Good. I have a floppy disk right here as a matter of fact.” He begins
downloading the information “See you later, good-day”
He raced out of the office and into his car, and turned on the Commline.
“I’ve got to warn Miss Peel” Twenty rings and no answer, “Hope she
can
handle herself”
LORD BARNS’S MANOR
At the time Steed was trying to warn Miss Peel, she had already
‘crashed’ her car in the ditch and was halfway to Lord Barns’s estate
on
foot. It was a magnificent manor, worthy of the Queen of England.
Knock, Knock, Knock “Yes Miss?” A distinguished looking butler answered
the door.
“Yes, um…”
“I’ll take you right to him miss”
Strangely the butler showed her directly to Lord Barns’s location.
They
stopped in a large room, in which Lord Barns was playing his organ,
a
large organ
“Here you are miss, would you like anything to drink?”
“No, thank you”
The butler walked up to the musician “She’s here”
Barns looked at him in utter disbelief, and turned around to see her.
He
stared at her for a few seconds then spoke
“So, what do you think of my organ?”
“I think it’s very nice. Rather big.”
“You’ll have to excuse me staring at you, you see you look very much
like my late girlfriend, see…”
He pointed toward a large portrait above the organ
“I can see the resemblance”
“I loved her dearly. But that’s not why you’re here. How may I help
you
Miss…”
“Peel, Emma Peel. My car broke down about a quarter mile down the road,
and my carphone isn’t working. Would you mind if I used your phone?”
“Well, Miss Peel, you certainly are lucky, you’ve cone to the right
place, the phone is over here.”
“You have a lovely mansion Mr.…”
“Barns, Lord Edward Barns, you may call me Edward if you like, and
thank
you. I was wondering if, after your phone call, you would like a tour
of
my estate.”
“Love too.” The butler entered
“The phone Miss Peel”
She quickly dialed Steed’s number. One ring, two, three, someone picked
up
“Miss Peel?”
“Steed I had a bit of car trouble on my way home, but a Lord Barns
has
graciously assisted me.
“So, you’re on the phone and in the same room. Are you in?”
“Yes, and yes, if you could pick me up that would be wonderful. It’s
34
Wimbleton Ave.
“Get as much inforomation out of him as possible. See you in two hours”
She put down the phone.
“So you’re friend will be here in a few minutes? That should be just
enough time to show you something. So, what do you do Miss Peel?”
“I’m a scientist”
“Oh, what are you working on?”
“A possible weather control system.” This took him off guard. Seeing
that he had slowed “Are you alright Lord Barns?”
“Yes, it’s just the idea has so much potential. Too control the weather
sounds interesting. Ah, here’s a room I think you’ll enjoy, it’s my
indoor greenhouse
He opened the door, and they both walked in. The heat rushed toward
them.
“See all those glass balls, each one contains an original type of plant.
No where in nature will you find plants like these. This one a
daffodil/rose mix”
“It’s lovely”
“This one a violet/ dandelion”
“Lord Barns, if this is your personal greenhouse, why are the plants
in
separate balls?”
“Each one needs different conditions to survive, if you mixed one with
the other than you might kill them both.”
“A bit like my weather experiments.”
“Yes, only a much smaller world. Shall we press on?”
They exited the room, and entered a large open roofed room
“This must be your observatory. My, that’s one of the biggest telescopes
I’ve ever seen.
“Yes, on clear nights you can see Neptune.” But Miss Peel seemed to
lose
interest in it rather quickly; directing attention to the door that
was
labeled Observatory Two
“What’s in there?”
“Oh, nothing, just another telescope, and a research lab.”
“I’d love to see the kind of research you do here”
“Maybe some other time” He said nervously as he edged her away from
the
door. The butler entered
“Miss Peel, your ride is here.”
“Well, thank you for a marvelous tour Lord Barns, you have a truly
lovely house”
“It was my pleasure Miss Peel. I’ll walk you out” They took a few steps
toward the door “Oh, I was wondering, I’m holding a party here tonight.
Would you care to join us? You can bring someone if you like.”
“Thank you that sounds wonderful”
“Excellent, be here at eight o’clock sharp”
“See you then” With that she joined Steed, who was parked in the
driveway.
NOTES
“So, what did you find?”
“Nothing, useful…yet.” She said with a smile
“I think you’re planning something”
“I think you’re right. Lord Barns is throwing a party tonight. He
invited me and said I could bring a friend.”
“But you said you didn’t find anything.”
“I didn’t. He blocked me out when he didn’t let me into his second
observatory, the one containing a research lab.”
“My guess is that we provide a distraction, and then go investigating”
“Have one in mind?
“Ah, here we are” Steed pulled into the driveway to Miss Peel’s flat
“By
the way what happened to your car?
“Oh, it’s right here” she said as she reached into her purse “See”
she
pulled out a little toy car
He shot her a look as if to tell her she was immature. She pushed a
button on the bottom of the car and placed it on the sidewalk in front
of her flat. It grew, and grew into the life-sized car it was
previously. So she went to a seemingly unimpressed Steed “Shall we
go
inside?” He followed her in.
“So, what did you find at Outlook’s?”
“He’s a bubbling idiot, but with a brilliant mind”
“Really, are you surprised?”
“He came up with the original substance that changes weather patterns.
Unfortunately he sold the formula along with rights and privileges.
To
‘you know who’.”
“I’m guessing I was investigating the ‘you know who’ today”
“You have a knack for correct guessing. So, when does the party start?”
“At eight, that means we should be there at seven thirty to snoop
around.”
“It takes an hour to get up there so I’ll meet you here at six thirty.
An hour and a half should be enough time to get ready in.”
“Yes, by that time I’ll have the blueprints for my new cell ready,
and
I’ll be experimenting”
“See, you then”
A hour later there was a knock at the door “Miss Peel? Miss Peel,
are
you ready?” He unlocked the door and came in, wearing a black tuxedo,
along with the usual accessories.
“I’ll be right down Steed, I just need to get this earring in”
Glancing down onto the chessboard, he made a move “Bishop to rook,
check!” then noticing the notes beside the game board “So, you did
finish the blueprints for the cell.”
“And I’ve begun experimenting” Then noticing a vase of roses on the
dining room table, he drew a sword from his umbrella and attempted
to
pick it up. Unfortunately he didn’t aim properly and missed the catch.
However Miss Peel, who was now standing behind him caught it and
proceeded to pin it to his jacket.
She was a vision of elegance. A strapless red dress, the top very form
flattering, the skirt slightly less tight, with a slit from her ankle
to
her thigh. A ruby necklace, matching bracelet, and earrings. Half of
her
hair sweeped up into bun, the other half, curled and to her shoulders.
Steed just stared at her in utter speechlessness.
“I see you’ve made a move on the board,” she said noticing the game
“Queen to bishop, check!” He smiled at her as if saying ‘good move’.
THE PARTY/ POLITE CONVERSATION
The secret agents arrived as early as they planed; they were not the
only ones. Cars and more cars pulled in and out of the driveway.
“Polite conversation, maybe dancing”
“I’ll make an excuse to leave and take care of the security details.”
“Then you get into the Observatory…”
“…And get the evidence”
“You know for an amateur, you’re very good,” Steed said with a smile
as
they got out of the car “Ready?” He said offering his arm
“As ready as ever,” she said taking it. They walked into a large room
populated by an estimated 200 people. Lord Barns noticed Miss Peel
right
away
“Emma, splendid you could join us,” then noticing Steed he said with
an
arrogant flair “And who’s your friend?”
Steed picked up his tone immediately, but kept his composer “John Steed,
a friend”. Then turning to Miss Peel “I’m going to get a drink would
you
like one?”
“Thank you” Steed gave another uneasy stare at Barns and turned to
leave. Finally picking up on the tone, Miss Peel changed the
subject
“Wonderful party my Lord.”
“Thank you. Oh there’s someone you must meet.” Turns to go get friend.
“Miss Peel this is Mr. Quincy Outlook, Mr. Outlook Miss Emma Peel.”
“My and don’t you look ap-peel-ing.”
“Thank you Mr. Outlook” She said with a smile
“Well, if you two won’t mind, I have other guests to attend to.” Lord
Barns leaves, starting a conversation with a gentleman, seconds later.
“Well Miss Peel, there are a few people dancing and I want to join
them.
Would you care to join them with me?”
“I’d love to.”
Steed had just gotten the drinks when he turned around to see Miss
Peel
being lead to the dance floor, by Mr. Outlook! He watched Quincy as
he
requested a song to the orchestra. The current music stopped. A salsa
rhythm started up. From a distance he could hear him tell her ‘to dance
as she felt”. The venom in his veins growing hotter. Simultaneously
as
Steed was noticing this, Lord Barns was, as well. He too felt the
jealous rush that Steed was experiencing.
They started dancing! Slow at first, letting the growing audience have
a
taste of what was to come. The music got faster, and likewise the
dancing moves. One, two, three spins, each becoming faster and faster.
Steed couldn’t take much more. He had made up his mind, he moved up
toward the pair in action
“Excuse me,” interrupting the middle of the dance “May I cut in?”
Angrily Quincy stormed off, humiliated. Steed resumed the dance in
his
place
“Steed what are you doing?” Emma said in between spins
“I was going to ask you the same thing.” A throw, up, up.
Unsurprisingly she pulled of a flip and landed on her feet
“I’m providing a distraction,” she said making sure the slit in her
dress was showing plenty of leg
“Excellent idea, except…(series of Broadway sweeps) …you’re the one
who
knows where the observatory is”
“I thought that you might have the common sense…(under, over series)
…
that you would be trying to look for it, on your own.” In between
spins
he was studying her, she was witty, athletic, and brilliant, the perfect
partner for him; and added to that was the bonus that she one of the
most beautiful women he had ever met.
“So, how are we going to pull it off? After this kind of dance he won’t
let you and I out of his sight”
“My dear Steed, this is one of the advantages of being 50% other. Qs
can’t split their molecular structure. Genetically inclined humans
can.”
(Salsa steps)
“You are full of surprises aren’t you Miss Peel. (Roll in)”
“That’s the general idea” And that was the end of the dance; final
stance, Steed’s arms around her waist, head tucked into her chest (think
Mask of Zorro). By this time Lord Barns was red with jealous anger,
but
continued to hide it under the cover of a gentleman. Cheers and applause
coming from the crowd.
“Well, done Emma! By George you certainly have a flair for dancing.”
And
then changing his tone back to shier arrogance, “Yes, congratulations
to
you as well Mr. Steed, I was surprised you kept up with her”
“I’m full of surprises” he said backing out of the conversation
“Well, if you’ll excuse me gentleman, there’s a glass of champagne
with
my name on it” Miss Peel said excusing herself from the awkward
situation. Then still facing Barns, Steed said slyly
“I’ll join you Miss Peel” as if saying to Barns ‘she prefers my
company’. He walked up to the bar
“I thought you said you didn’t like champagne,” he said to her as she
took a sip
“No, I love champagne, just not from you.” She said taking another
sip
“If you get the notes in the greenhouse, I’ll get the ones from the
observatory.”
“Sounds good, I’ll meet you back here…”
“Wait,” she started looking around the room “I can hear those security
guards talking, they’re watching us as well. Steed I’m going to have
to
get you out of here, and now. The orders were ‘the next time you’re
alone…”
“… I’m to be dealt with. That puts a damper on things”
“Maybe not. No one’s looking anymore. Pretend you dropped something,
and
stay down”
“What?”
“Just do it” So he pretended to drop something, went down to pick it
up,
causally, she bent down as well, as if to happen. A grey puddle overtook
Miss Peel’s body and moved toward Steed. Soon there was nothing left
of
them, except a large puddle of grey matter.
INVESTIGATING
The puddle moved out of the ballroom, and into the adjoining hallway
passing all the security guards. However the ride was short lived,
it
soon stopped in front of a door, then moved under the doorway and into
the room. Once inside it reformed into the two separate people it was
made from. She checked the security system beside the door.
“ Good, we haven’t been detected yet” still studying the devise
“Extraordinary Miss Peel, what other tricks do you have up your sleeve?”
She turned to face him
“Wouldn’t you like to know. This is the greenhouse; the observatory
is a
door down. Just knock on the wall, if you’re in trouble”
“Meet you back here in twenty minutes.”
“See you then” she said as she turned grey, and disappeared into a
puddle. She slipped into the observatory, making sure to be especially
careful of any hidden alarms. She gracefully slipped into the second
observatory.
“ As Archemetes would say ‘Eureka’!” Before her was a large telescope
with a Proton Beam Launcher attached to the end of the tube, but no
controls. She looked around he room, a stairwell, leading to another
room. The lock on the door to the room was easily broken, so she began
to search through the files and for the control panel. Failing at
finding the controls, she proceeded to picked out seven files,
and
slipped them under her underclothes, making sure everything was
carefully flat. Closing the file cabinet, she turned to leave, but
a
door caught her eye. She opened the door to discover a long, winding
stairwell. Unfortunately her twenty minutes were up and she had to
meet
Steed. She was just about to puddle out when she heard someone coming
in. The lights turned on. Deciding she could deal with whatever it
was
if it discovered her, she backed in against a wall, out of the
intruder’s view. Two security guards entered, one began to speak
“Check in here, Lord Barns instructed to leave no room unsearched.
Oh,
and he said push that button, he said it might push them out of
hiding.” The other one proceeded to push the button. As soon
as he did,
both Steed and Miss Peel, felt something pass through them, and then
just as quickly pass out of them. Steed had no clue, and was therefore
defenseless, she on the other hand knew exactly what had happened.
“Hey, let’s check in the office” Knowing what was to follow,
Miss Peel
decided to make the first move. She removed the bottom of her dress,
to
reveal a pair of skintight red pedal-pushers. The office light turned
on, to reveal a very ready looking Miss Peel. Realizing exactly who
she
was, the security guard proceeded to take out a gun.
“You stay right there, do you hear me?” she gave a polite nod “Alright
move. Lord Barns wants to see you.”
The other one noticed that Steed wasn’t with her. “Wait a minute.
Where’s you’re friend?”
“What friend?” Miss Peel said, trying to sound innocent
“Don’t try to play games with me, you bitch. The friend you were dancing
with; where is he”
“Excuse me what did you call me? I advise you to take it back, or you’ll
regret it. I know I will.”
“Regret what?” She elbowed the man behind her and flipped him into
the
man on front
“That for example, and I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive
me for this” (judo chop) “and this,”
(Vulcan nerve pinch) “…And for taking your gun”
“Miss Peel?” Steed said calmly as he walked into the Observatory “Are
you alright? I was worried.”
“No, you weren’t. I just had a spot of trouble” she said joining him
“I had a couple of visitors myself. Nice outfit, shall we go”
“Considering we’ll be swamped by security if we don’t, let’s go.” She
said moving toward the window
“What are you doing?”
“You don’t honestly expect to go out the door, without having a million
bullets shot at you”
“I thought we might do that puddle thing again”
“It’s called morphing.”
“Oh, is that what you call it. Well, even if we didn’t it wouldn’t
hurt
much, I’m a Q after all.”
(Opening the window) “Not anymore you’re not. Time to rough it like
most
of the universe.”
“What?” Three more security guards burst through the door, immediately
shot down by Miss Peel; without even trying to make it look complicated.
“No time to explain now,” she said grabbing his hand and pulling him
towards the open window. “Go on. Jump!”
THE NEXT MORNING
The next morning in Miss Peel’s flat, she gently kneeled down beside
the
bed on which Steed was sleeping. “Steed, Steed, time to wake up. Come
Along, we have to go meet Mother for breakfast. Mustn’t keep mother
waiting”
A half asleep Steed opened his eyes, and focused in on Miss Peel’s
overlooking face “What? What happened?”
“You fell asleep on the way home from the party.” She said handing
him a
cup of tea “I didn’t know where your house was so, I let you sleep
in
the spare room.”
“I suppose I should thank you.”
She looked at him, cool as ever. “I anticipated you might want to go
straight on to the Ministry, so I arranged for your tailor to drop
of
you’re new suit here instead, it’s hanging on the back of the door.
Need
anything else?”
“I need an answer” he said now fully awake, sitting up, and looking
Miss
Peel right in the eye.
“To what?”
“To you’re comment last night, about no longer being a Q”
“You can answer that question yourself Steed. Go ahead try to zap up
something.” He proceeded to try, and failed. He looked at her with
a
shocked and half frightened look on his face
