Halle Berry in Catwoman.
Why should guys have all the fun?

Action star has primarily been a male occupation. But women are no longer content to always play the one in need of saving, or even the good girl. More and more female action heroes (and villains) are taking on prominent roles.

TRAIL-BLAZING AMAZONS OF FILM AND TELEVISION:

Who set the stage for Halle Berry's "Catwoman"?

Before female action stars were the norm, here were some of our favorites:

XENA

Who: Xena (Lucy Lawless) once led a band of outlaws in ancient Greece and now fights the forces of evil.

TV series: "Xena, Warrior Princess," 1995-2001.

Weapon of choice: Xena was never without her chakram, a razor-sharp, discus-like weapon she could throw at astonishing speeds. Chakrams are not a Hollywood invention; they originated in India.

Love connection: Trusty sidekick Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor).

Archenemy: Callisto (Hudson Leick).
