Text: Barely 3 years ago Lucy Lawless, star of the worldwide tv hit 'Xena: Warrior Princess', was living an anonymous life. The actress from Mount Albert, a small town in New Zealand, where her father used to be mayor, was frequently unemployed. The film climate wasn't really booming in the outback. Next to that Lucy, who turns 30 this year, also had to fulfill the role of a divorced mother. To stay employed she accepted every offer she encountered. That way she once played a small part in the American series 'Hercules'. Accidentally the producers of 'Hercules' were thinking of making a similar show but then with a woman. That show became 'Xena: Warrior Princess', based on the old Amazon myths, about a warrior woman who battles evil tirans and other bad guys, together with her warrior friend Gabrielle. Shortly before starting shooting though, the hired lead actress fell ill. Producer Robert Tapert remembered Lucy's appearance in 'Hercules'. The rest is tv history. Lucy dyed her blond hair black and got dressed in an not really archeologically justified sexy fantasy suit. At the moment the show, aired here by Veronica, can be seen in more than 50 countries. A syndicated hit that even approaches the world record of 'Baywatch'. Xena is popular with little kids (because of the high comic book-like contents) and with grown-ups (because of the much speculated about bi-sexual undertone). Lucy Lawless is the cult heroine of this time, with her own fan clubs, internet sites and everything surrounding that. "It's that masculine part that makes Xena so attractive", according to Lucy, "She's the kind of woman with whom you can have a beer". That's not enough for producer Tapert. He will marry Lucy soon. Well, that was the article. The show also was mentioned in another article in the same mag. The article is called "Enjoying violence". Quote: "Xena and Hercules are the most violent actionshows, that are aired almost daily by Veronica" Dutch --- I tell you: in time to come, someone will remember us Sappho
