Sword & Staff Announcement

The holidays are once again right around the corner, and again this year I've been looking for something that S&S members can do to help those who are less fortunate than we are during the holiday season.

Last year, we supported the Angel Christmas Tree, and I hope that once their website is updated for 1999, we'll be able to once again help make Christmas a little brighter for the children and elders of the Lakxota Sioux tribe in South Dakota. Information on the Angel Christmas Tree will follow as soon as it is available.

This year, there is another effort I would like to suggest. Orphanages throughout Russia and the other former Soviet republics are overcrowded and in dire need of help and support. Not only is there an urgent need for clothing in these group homes, there is an even more urgent need for food. We can help to alleviate some of that need through donations. I've spoken with Children at Heart Adoption Services, Inc. here in New York State, and they have a support program that will channel any funds we donate directly to the orphanages. 100% of every check will go to assist the children. When I asked if perhaps we could send clothing or other needed articles like diapers, I was informed that those types of items never make it to the orphanage once they leave the plane. For that reason, Children At Heart has one of their Russian facilitators or an adoptive parent take the money to the orphanage and accompany orphanage personnel on a shopping trip to stock up on supplies needed by the individual facilities. I was told that the most pressing need is for food and I will ask that our donations be earmarked for foodstuffs for the children.

As always, donations are tax deductible. If you'd like to contribute to a fund that will help bring aid to four of the Russian orphanages, please send a donation payable to Children At Heart Adoption Services, Inc. and send your check to:

I know that many of you helped out with the Angel Christmas Tree effort last year and wanted to repeat the experience this year. As soon as information is available, I'll post up and let you know.
