01 Centerpiece Story - London
 

 

Διηγούμαι την ιστορία μιάς θορυβώδους πόλης και πώς η Ζήνα ανακάλυψε νέα μέσα μεταφοράς.....

I sing the song of a bustling town and a new means of transport

 

It took me a while to get my memories of Britannia into perspective, when we decided to visit the island again. We saw that many of its villages were now bustling towns, full of life.   The city of London was huge and I’d never seen so many people in one place before (besides Rome, of course). We walked along a river called Tems (although I think I saw it spelled Thames) and marvelled

at the magnificent buildings that were here now.

We heard of a Circus in town and went to find it, but the streets were so packed we could not move. There were so many people and carts that we had nowhere to go. Xena’s patience was disappearing fast and without warning she grabbed my arm and Argo’s bridle and dragged me over to a huge hole in the ground. She asked the man there where the hole went and was told it went some 10 stadia to the south where it exited by his brother Isambard’s Inn. Knowing Xena’s thoughts, I struck a deal so that he would let us use the tunnel if we would take his full cart to his brother. So down we went into the underground. As we were heading down someone shouted "hey, where are they going?" and I heard Brunel tell him to "get back, they paid to use this

tunnel".

Several years later I received a letter from Brunel. He wrote that he and Isambard decided to follow Xena’s idea and had changed the use of the tunnels from storage to a shortcut  people paid to avoid the jams above ground. He thanked us for giving him the idea in the first place and said that had used something we might recognize to create their company logo - the drawing he sent together with the letter was very clear and we both smiled as we did recognize the image of a simpler, but unmistakable, Chakram.
